Rauenstein is a village in the southern Thuringian district of Sonneberg . It is part of the community of Frankenblick .

geography

Rauenstein is located in the Grümpen valley on the southern edge of the Thuringian Slate Mountains, about 2 km west of Effelder .

history

The place at the same name and older Rauenstein Castle was first mentioned in 1445. Historically, the castle, which has been in the possession of the von Schaumberg family for centuries , was the determining factor of the place. In 1783, Duke Georg I of Saxony-Meiningen licensed the Rauenstein porcelain factory founded by Johann Friedrich Greiner right next to the castle, which became the town's most important source of income and in 1851 already had 180 employees. In 1910 the place was opened up by the Eisfeld – Sonneberg railway line .

During the Second World War , 170 men and women from France , Ukraine and Russia had to do forced labor in the Richard Schneider von Rauenstein company and in agriculture.

On a hilltop high above the village became GDR one -times pioneer - camps established and maintained, in the first children were able to participate in the Western zones. Today the site is in operation as a privately run "Ferienzentrum Rauenstein".

On January 1, 2012, Rauenstein became part of the Frankenblick community as part of the merger of the communities of Effelder-Rauenstein and Mengersgereuth-Hammern .

The place is north of the federal highway 89 , which leads from Sonneberg to Eisfeld . It also has a train station on the Eisfeld – Sonneberg railway line .

Museums

  • Rauenstein Porcelain Cabinet in the Museum Neues Schloss Rauenstein , cabinet exhibition with special exhibitions that change every six months. The main focus of the collection is on exhibits from the Rauensteiner Porcelain Manufactory, founded in 1783 and one of the oldest porcelain manufacturers in Germany. She became known for her solid porcelain with blue painting. The exhibition also shows exclusive pieces in purple and green, such as the bird motif, which has become a trademark of the Rauensteiner Manufactory.
  • Schildkröt Puppet Museum: A large number of celluloid and tortulon dolls are shown and the history of the Schildkröt company is presented.

Natural and architectural monuments

  • The largest accommodation facility in the Sonneberg district is the Rauenstein holiday center. In 15 Finnhütten there are 150 beds available for groups, clubs and school classes.
  • The Rauenstein castle ruins with their bizarre remains of the donjon characterize the townscape of Rauenstein. In 1349 the castle was first mentioned in a document as a hearthstone owned by the Lords of Schaumburg . It was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and has since been left to decay. Refurbishment attempts were only made at the end of the 1990s, but these were not completed. Since then there has been a dramatic decline in the structure of the keep, remains of the ring wall, gate construction and shell towers. In 2004, the Thuringian-Franconian History Association was founded with the aim of saving the Rauenstein castle ruins. V. founded. As a result of the initiatives of the association, the municipality of Effelder-Rauenstein and the monument protection authorities of Thuringia, the purchase agreement between the previous owner company LEG-Thuringia and the municipality of Effelder-Rauenstein was signed on August 24, 2006, and the keep was renovated at the end of 2006. Since then, volunteers have been working to preserve the ruins and make the castle area accessible.
  • The core of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Maria and George dates from the 15th century.
