geography

Mengersgereuth-Hammern is located in the Effelder valley on the southern edge of the Thuringian Slate Mountains . In the north is the street village of Hammern, which merges seamlessly into the street village of Mengersgereuth in the south. To the south-east is the Forschengereuth district on the slope of the 719 meter high Oberschaar mountain . Immediately to the south-west of Mengersgereuth is the village ofschichtshöhn .

Community structure

Mengersgereuth-Hammern consisted of four districts that have grown together:

The formerly independent settlements Black Forest and Augustenthal can also be found in the area of the former districts .

history

The district Forschengereuth was first mentioned in a document in the Henneberger Erbbuch in 1317 , making it the oldest district in the community. The district of Hammern had its origins in a mining settlement from the 15th century. In the area around Hammern, iron ore was mined in several shafts and tunnels until 1866 and processed in a hammer mill, later named Augustenthal. The charcoal required for iron ore extraction was produced on site using numerous coal kilns . The poor quality of the ore, which is said to have a high proportion of phosphate , led to the abandonment of mining in hammers as early as the 19th century. The districts Mengersgereuth and Forschengereuth were clearing settlements and predominantly agricultural. In 1726 the towns of Hammern, Forschengereuth, Rabenüßig and Mengersgereuth received their own parish in Mengersgereuth with the Erlöserkirche at the foot of the Strohberg.

The place was created on April 1, 1923 from the merger of the four formerly independent places Forschengereuth, Mengersgereuth, Hammern andschichtshöhn.

During the time of National Socialism , local citizens were persecuted, among them Ewald Steiner, who was interned in the Bad Sulza concentration camp . When he was about to be arrested again in 1939, he evaded the Gestapo's access by suicide. During the Second World War , 82 women and men from the Soviet Union , Poland and Czechoslovakia had to do forced labor in the companies August Görting & Co. , M. Schnetter & Co. , Oscar Brückner and in the porcelain factory . The history of Mengersgereuth-Hammern during National Socialism also includes the attempted renaming of the community to Hitler Mountains , which was ultimately not approved, but was included in maps on various occasions.
