Steinheid is a district of the town of Neuhaus am Rennweg in Thuringia in the Sonneberg district .
geography
The state-approved health resort Steinheid is located on the ridge of the Thuringian Slate Mountains , directly on the Rennsteig . The place is crescent-shaped over the valley of the Grümpen . At 820 meters high, Steinheid is one of the highest places in Thuringia, along with Neuhaus am Rennweg (835 m). The highest mountain in the area and the second highest in the Thuringian Slate Mountains is the 868 meter high Kieferle , approx. 500 meters east of the village.
Local division
Limbach , about one kilometer to the west, and Neumannsgrund , about one kilometer to the south-west, have belonged to Steinheid since the middle of the 19th century .
history
In 1362 the place was first mentioned as the Steynerne Heyde in a feudal letter from the Margrave of Meißen.
Gold mining was once operated there in particular. In 1430 the gold mines near Steinheid were captured and plundered by the Hussites .
In 1530 Steinheid was elevated to a free mountain town. In the Thirty Years War the mining of the city with 51 collieries was completely destroyed. After that, glass-blowing and box- making were important branches of business as supplying trades for the oil trade .
Until 1920 Steinheid belonged to Sachsen-Meiningen .
On December 1, 2011, Steinheid was incorporated into the town of Neuhaus am Rennweg. Before that, the city of Steinach had been a fulfilling municipality for Steinheid since 1997 .
Winter sports
Due to the altitude, Steinheid is a traditional winter sports resort. Organized winter sports were founded in 1910 and skiing competitions are still held regularly today. They are organized and carried out by SC Steinheid eV.

Economy and Infrastructure
In Steinheid there used to be mining and slate extraction. Today the place lives mainly from tourism . The glass industry is established with the largest employer Thuringian tree decorations Steinheid and numerous home workshops.

Steinheid is on the B 281 , which connects Saalfeld to Eisfeld via Neuhaus am Rennweg . Communal roads lead to Steinach, Scheibe-Alsbach and Schalkau .
