Bernd Eckstein (born May 22, 1953 in Mengersgereuth-Hammern ) is a former German ski jumper .

Career

Eckstein started early with ski jumping with SC Motor Zella-Mehlis . In 1970 he set a new hill record on the Großer Vogtlandschanze in Klingenthal , which lasted until 1973. Eckstein made his international debut at the Four Hills Tournament 1970/71 . Already in the opening competition on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf he surprised in eighth place. The jumping on the Great Olympic Hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , which he finished in seventh place, went even better . After two further good top 20 placements in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen , he finished the tour in ninth place.

At the first team competition on the Aschbergschanze in Klingenthal, he and the team, which also included Heinz Schmidt , Rainer Schmidt and Horst Queck , came second behind the team from Brotterode .

After a year of international break he could not build on this success at the Four Hills Tournament 1972/73 and only finished the tour in 17th place overall. He did his best tour with the Four Hills Tournament 1973/74 . Although he only started with 16th place in Oberstdorf, he climbed significantly as sixth in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. After he celebrated his only career win at the final competition on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen , he finished the tour in third place in the tour's overall ranking.

He then traveled as a member of the national team to the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1974 in Falun . From the large hill he landed in 13th place after jumps on 92.5 and 93 meters. From the normal hill, he reached fifth place with jumps on 86 and 81.5 meters.

Despite this success, Eckstein did not start in the Four Hills Tournament 1974/75 . It was not until the following year that he started again and finished the Four Hills Tournament 1975/76 in ninth place overall.

At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck and Seefeld in Tirol , Eckstein achieved 32nd place on the normal hill and a good seventh place on the large hill. At the GDR Ski Championships in 1976 in Lauscha a little later he secured silver on the normal hill and bronze on the large hill. He also won bronze with the team.

For the Four Hills Tournament in 1977/78 Eckstein once again achieved sixth place in the overall standings, with fourth in Oberstdorf only just missing another podium. At the GDR ski championships in 1978 in Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig , he again won the runner-up title on the normal hill.

After the Four Hills Tournament in 1978/79 , in which Eckstein only competed in the two German jumping competitions and only finished 78th in the overall ranking, he ended his active ski jumping career.
