from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 30th GDR ski championships took place from February 4th to 7th, 1978 in Schmiedefeld , Thuringia . In nine decisions of the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , 170 participants entered. The cross-country skiing competitions in the then so-called marathon distances over 20 km for women and 50 km for men had already taken place on December 23, 1977 in the Saxon Zinnwald , but were rated as GDR championships.

After Gert-Dietmar Klause finished 6th in the 30 km decision, this time he won half the distance. He relegated his club mate Alf-Gerd Deckert to second place. With Hartmut Freyer from Oberwiesenthal and the third Klingenthaler Jürgen Wolf, only Saxon cross-country skiers came in on the first 4 places.

Final runner Klause was called too late to change and Jürgen Wolf had to wait 35 seconds for his replacement. Nevertheless, the season won by two and a half minutes.

Women

5 km

If their triumph over the 10 km distance already made people sit up and take notice, the victory in the sprint was a big surprise. In the presence of top athletes like Barbara Petzold, who were still missing over 10 km, Christel Meinel was able to win her second GDR championship title. Behind her came the junior world champion Birgit Schreiber from Oberwiesenthal. The decision about the bronze medal was dramatic. In the final sprint, last year's champion Veronika Schmidt had the better end for herself with 63 hundredths ahead of Sigrun Filbrich-Krause.

10 km

In a starting field of only 21 athletes, Klingenthaler Christel Meinel was able to prevail. Top runners like Barbara Petzold , Veronika Schmidt or Ute Nestler stayed away from the competition on medical advice because of severe colds. Nevertheless, Sigrun Filbrich-Krause was considered the favorite, but she had to be beaten by the only 20-year-old Christel Meinel.

20 km

Unlike with the men, the marathon decision was by no means so clear-cut. In the end Barbara Petzold from Oberwiesenthal won the eagerly awaited duel against Monika Debertshäuser-Heßler with a 9 second lead. Elvira Pechmann won her first championship medal ever.

4x5 km relay

Thanks to Christel Meinel's individual performances, SC Dynamo Klingenthal hoped to win again in the relay for the first time since 1971. And Meinel was again the fastest of all athletes. Nevertheless, the team from SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal around Barbara Petzold saved a lead of 1.5 seconds across the finish line in the final sprint thanks to their final runner Ute Nestler.

Nordic combination

In the starting field of 14 combiners, Ulrich Wehling was once again able to prevail. However, the junior world champion from 1977, Gunter Schmieder, who started for SC Dynamo Klingenthal and the double Olympic champion, did not make it easy. With three times the best distance, Schmieder went into cross-country skiing with a 22-second lead after jumping. And after 10 km Wehling had only made up for 7 seconds on Schmieder. In the last 2 km, however, Wehling still ran out of time that he was ultimately able to win the championship with a 2.5 point lead. The 1976 Olympic bronze medalist from Innsbruck , Konrad Winkler, was still lagging behind his form and took a disappointing 4th place. A few days later, however, he was to become world champion .

Normal hill

The last competition of the championships was dominated by the SC Motor Zella-Mehlis team, which was able to place a total of 4 jumpers in the top six. Last year's champion and renewed title holder Harald Duschk also benefited from Jochen Danneberg's fall in the second round. Matthias Buse secured the bronze medal by a wafer-thin 0.9 points ahead of his club-mate Henry Glaß. Large hill winner Weißpflog had nothing to do with the decision.

Large hill

Falko Weißpflog, who started for SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal, was able to secure the GDR championship title on the Oberhof Rennsteigschanze among 34 starters. However, both jumps differ fundamentally. Martin Weber , who initially came second, jumped 19 meters shorter in the second round and only came in 7th. Matthias Buse saved himself on bronze after jumping 13.5 meters shorter in the second round as the leader with the best distance of 114 meters for the day. Thus, two jumps of 110 meters each were enough for Weißpflog's championship title. Jochen Danneberg came in second thanks to an increase in performance.

Medal table

Within the 4 winter sports centers, the two Saxon clubs clearly retained the upper hand. They won two thirds of all medals. The SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal celebrated victories in all Nordic ski disciplines. The ASK Oberhof fell short of its expectations, but also had other winter sports focuses such as BOB, racing sleds and biathlon.
