GDR ski championships 1962
The 14th GDR ski championships took place from February 3rd to 5th, 1962 in Schmiedefeld , Thuringia . In eight decisions of the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , two of which were team competitions, 220 athletes took part. The championship decision in men's 50 km cross-country skiing was held on March 11, 1962 in Carlsfeld , Saxony . While for the Nordic World Ski Championships which will take place shortly afterwards in Zakopane, Poland the cross-country skiers were already determined, the championships in ski jumping and Nordic combined were the last qualifying competitions for the World Cup.
Cross-country skiing
Men
15 km
The first men's competition started with temperatures around zero degrees and sunshine. In the end there was a triple success in Klingenthal, with Enno Röder winning the title with a lead of 13 seconds. Vice-champion Helmut Weidlich had to cope with a fall that cost him valuable seconds. Former master Kuno Werner came in 5th.

The 32-year-old Heinz Seidel from Klingenthal celebrated his first individual title. In pouring rain, the conditions for the 40 starters were extremely complicated, and quite a few gave up. Seidel started half a minute behind Kuno Werner and was able to work his way up to him as the race progressed. In the end, he won the race by 50 seconds.

50 km
The last championship title was surprisingly won by the biathlete Dieter Ritter in Carlsfeld. He actually outclassed the competition because his lead over the runner-up was over four minutes. Defending champion Kuno Werner had obviously waxed thoroughly under difficult conditions, in the sun it was up to 20 ° C warm. He crossed the finish line in eleventh place, over fifteen minutes behind.

4 × 10 km relay
What was already evident about the individual routes continued in the relay. A 36-year-old Kuno Werner alone was not enough to endanger the Klingenthal squadron with the aces Weidlich, Röder and Seidel. With just over a minute, the gap could be kept within limits at the end.

5 km
Over the short distance Christa Herklotz was able to turn the tables and won the race in front of Sonnhilde Kallus in unpleasant continuous rain.

Sonnhilde Kallus was able to win the first women's competition quite confidently. The battle for the bronze medal, however, was exciting. In the end, Karen Jahns and Christine Nestler were only separated by a full second. Last year's champion Renate Dannhauer was absent due to a bereavement.

3x5 km relay
In the women's relay competition, before the championships, it looked like a duel between previous year's champion Zella-Mehlis and the frequent relay winners from Klingenthal. But thanks in particular to Christa Herklotz, the Oberwiesenthal relay has now moved into the circle of the title favorites. And after the second change, the Oberwiesenthalers also led, Christa Herklotz followed the trail ten seconds ahead of Sonnhilde Kallus. Renate Dannhauer's distance from defending champion Zella-Mehlis was already too big to be able to intervene in the title fight.

Nordic combination
The combination competition started this time upside down, namely initially with the run. It is only known that Kurt Albrecht was the director of the bread maker. In addition, last year's champion Günter Flauger was in hospital with a broken collarbone. The jumping competition that took place on the Oberhofer Thüringenschanze had to be canceled on Monday, February 5th. After two rounds and several falls as a result of unpredictable gusts of wind, the organizers pulled the rip cord and postponed the jumping to Tuesday morning. In jumping, Rainer Dietel was able to push himself into first place with the best jumps and thus won his first championship title. In the final ranking there were only combiners from SC Dynamo Klingenthal in the first eight places.

Ski jumping
On the then largest natural hill in the GDR, the Walter-Ulbricht Schanze in Vessertal, the last World Championship event took place in front of 15,000 spectators. After 3 rounds there was a Zella-Mehliser double success. Dietmar Klemm, who had not been part of the national team until then, narrowly qualified for the World Cup with his 6th place.

Medal table
The Klingenthal athletes put their stamp on the championships, winning six of the eight titles awarded in Schmiedefeld. The performance of the Oberhof athletes, who won the second most medals but did not take home a title, was disappointing.
