GDR Ski Championships 1985

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The competitions of the 37th GDR Ski Championships took place from January 31 to February 3, 1985 in Oberwiesenthal , Saxony . Nine competitions, seven individual and two relay decisions, in cross-country skiing , Nordic combined and ski jumping were held. Due to the cancellation of the combined jump, the event concentrated on three days instead of four. Just a few days earlier, the Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld , Austria , had ended. There the GDR team was able to fight for one gold and two bronze medals. The endurance championships over 20 km for women and 50 km for men in Carlsfeld, Saxony, on March 17, 1985 rounded off the title fights.

Nordic combination

The ski jumping on the Oberwiesenthaler Schanze was initially moved from Friday to Saturday due to rain and strong winds. After completing the jump run, Heiko Hunger, fourth in the World Championships, by far the best jumper in the field, was well ahead with three jumps over 90 m. He also set a new hill record with 97.5 m. Before the 15 km run , which was held for the first time using the Gundersen method , this meant a lead of no less than 6:21 minutes over his club-mate Uwe Dotzauer. So Hunger was able to afford the worst running time among the 8 athletes without losing its top position. The runner-up Dotzauer managed to catch up almost five and a half minutes, so that in the end he crossed the finish line just 53 seconds behind Hunger.
