GDR ski championships 1972
The 24th GDR ski championships were to take place from January 15 to 18, 1972 in the Klingenthal-Mühlleithen ski region in Vogtland . The well-known Mühlleithen women's ski race, which had been scheduled shortly beforehand, had already been canceled there due to the unfavorable snow conditions. The GDR Skierverband initially postponed the dress rehearsal for the Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo , but did not catch up with the championship. For this reason, the GDR championships of 1972 are marked as failed in many publications. Nevertheless, in the 1971/72 winter sports season GDR champions were chosen for 1972, over 50 km for men and 10 km for women. The associated competitions were relocated from Oberhof to Oberwiesenthal to the Sachsenbaude because of unfavorable weather conditions .
Cross-country skiing
The external conditions could not be called optimal. In order to be able to run the race at all, the organizers had set the finish and start at the Sachsenbaude at an altitude of 1100 m on the Fichtelberg. The track consisted of old snow, the air temperature was +5 ° C.

As the clear winner, Gert-Dietmar Klause received the championship honors. He left his competitors far behind.

There was more of a surprise winner among the women. Klingenthal resident Christel Thiel won gold, ahead of the next generation Marita Dotter Weich. The outcome of the race was favored by the retirement of the favored runners Renate Fischer and Anni Unger due to a stick or ski break.
