GDR ski championships 1960

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 12th GDR Ski Championships took place from March 6th to 8th, 1960 in Klingenthal , Saxony . In seven decisions of the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , two of which were team competitions, athletes competed. The championship decision in men's 50 km cross-country skiing was held on February 7, 1960 in Goldlauter-Heidersbach . The championships took place after the Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley , at which Helmut Recknagel became Olympic champion in ski jumping and, after Harry Glaß, won the second Olympic medal for Nordic skiers from the GDR in 1956 . A total of 15 participants from the GDR had qualified for the Nordic ski disciplines.

Men

15 km

After the defeat in the relay, Kuno Werner now wanted to turn the tables on the first individual route. And he succeeded, albeit under strange circumstances. Co-favorite Enno Röder missed his start and only started the race 20 seconds after his start. And Röder carried this backpack with him throughout the race. In the end he was 28 seconds short of victory. The increased performance of the Klingenthal runners, which could already be seen in the relay decision, continued. Three teammates lined up behind Röder, ahead of Olympic starter Egon Fleischmann. The race was also the combined running competition. Günter Flauger, placed 13th in the overall ranking, ran the fastest time. However, his mileage was not rated so highly to be able to speak of defending his title.

30 km

After his missed start over 15 km, the local Enno Röder wanted to quickly forget this embarrassing faux pas. And for a long time it looked good, Röder was leading after running 20 kilometers. But on the last 10 kilometers, Kuno Werner was able to add some pressure, while the Klingenthal team dismantled Röder and Weidlich. In the end, Kuno Werner won again with a 24-second lead over Enno Röder.

4 × 10 km relay

The relay championship was the first men's competition to be held on the Mühlleiten cross-country ski run. 14 seasons competed, the ASK Vorwärts Oberhof sent six seasons to the start. And his first representation was made up of four top-class Olympic participants, the local first Klingenthal relay could only come up with two Olympic starters. But to everyone's surprise, the Klingenthalers were ahead after the first change, the Oberhof defending champions were only fourth, 85 seconds behind. And the next changes brought hardly any improvement, Heinz Seidel even ran the best time of the day. It was up to Kuno Werner to at least secure the runner-up title, which he succeeded. But the first day of the competition had a surprise in store for the first decision.

3x5 km relay

As in the previous year, the first cross-country skiing competition for women was the Klingenthal-Oberwiesenthal duel. And the Fichtelberg relay started with two Olympic starters. But Elfriede Spiegelhauer was the first to change, but only three seconds before Renate Borges. In the following duel Jahns-Göhler, the Oberwiesenthalerin was able to bring her season into the lead. But Christine Söldner could not stand up to the local Sonnhilde Kallus and came in second in the end. Thus last year's winner Klingenthal was able to defend his title, albeit with a smaller margin.

Nordic combination

The running competition was completed as part of the 15 km individual competition for cross-country skiing specialists. After that, Olympic starter Günter Flauger led. Martin Körner, another Olympian, had to give up cross-country skiing because of a broken ski. However, Flauger's lead was not unreachable. This was also evident in the jumping, in which the Brotteroder Karl-Heinz Herzer and the Klingenthaler Manfred Meinhold pressed the leader more and more. In the end, Flauger was able to defend his title with a wafer-thin 0.3 point lead. And only 0.3 points were between silver and bronze.

Ski jumping

The championships started with ski jumping as the first competition, which took place in front of 30,000 spectators on the Great Aschbergschanze. Of course, one was particularly excited about the appearance of the newly crowned Olympic champion Helmut Recknagel. Based on the different training performances, the jury had reduced the starting field from 71 to 44 participants even before the jumping. After the first round, thirteen more jumpers were taken out of the competition because of falls. The local Manfred Glaß led somewhat surprisingly, Recknagel came in fifth with a safety jump after the first round, but was only 3.5 points behind the leader. Olympian Werner Lesser put the first warning sign in the second round with a score of 121.0 points, but due to his fall in the first round he could no longer intervene in the title event. So it was reserved for the third Olympic starter Veit Kühren to set a benchmark for the championship title with a jump of 92.5 m, which was rated with 120.5 points. Helmut Recknagel was now forced by his careful tactics in the first round to go all out. Although he jumped a sensational distance of 98 m, he could not stand the jump and fell. Nevertheless, it was still enough for ninth place. But Recknagel's club-mate Veit Kühr was a bit surprisingly champion. And the other medal winners were not necessarily expected because of the participation of all Olympic jumpers, Harald Pfeffer and Günter Oettel had very few on the bill.

Medal table

The local SC Dynamo was once again the best sports club, even if the competition from Oberhof, especially through triple champion Kuno Werner, was hard on the Klingenthalers' heels.
