For the first time, the women's relay was held with four runners. On January 7, 1973, the men's 50 km champion was crowned.
Cross-country skiing
Men
15 km
Even over the shortest men's route, Gerhard Grimmer was unable to intervene in the title event. Only Axel Lesser from Oberhof was able to break into the Klingenthal phalanx and take bronze. Co-favorite Gerd Heßler gave up because of a broken ski.

30 km
With temperatures around zero degrees and a wet track, the most important thing was the right wax. The athletes ran three loops of 10 km each, which, however, as even the press recognized, were not measured very precisely. This was the only way to explain the fable times. Rainer Groß had the best boards of all the starters, pushed himself forward from lap to lap and in the end won with 17 seconds ahead of Gerd Hessler. Gert-Dietmar Klause completed the Klingenthal triple success. All three athletes only recovered shortly before the championship. Co-favorite Gerhard Grimmer, who had obviously grown out of shape, came in 9th, almost four and a half minutes behind.

50 km
In warm temperatures, the athletes ran their 4.17 km lap high up on the Großer Beerberg . Despite a cramp on the last lap, Gerhard Grimmer was able to organize the race with confidence and relegated Gerd Heßler to silver, more than a minute behind. Rainer Groß still fought for the bronze medal despite a broken ski.

4 × 10 km relay
After the strong individual performances of the Klingenthal men, the outcome of the relay race for the experts was only a matter of form. And after the first change it looked as expected, as Gerd Heßler handed over to Gert-Dietmar Klause with a 27 second lead. However, Gerhard Grimmer, who had been a bit disappointing up until then, was in second position in the Oberhof relay, and Klause lost 48 seconds on his lap. Meinel, who had previously been ill for three weeks, had nothing to order against Frank Spengler and so Rainer Groß gave up a bit, so that the Oberhof relay was a little unexpected champion in the end with a lead of over two minutes.

Nordic combination
Ulrich Wehling was already in front after jumping on the ski jump in Vessertal, although he started with a fall. Hans Hartleb was still in second place ahead of Günter Deckert. In cross-country skiing on the following day, an athlete came to the fore who had not been expected until then. Bernd Zimmermann from Klingenthal ran the best time and took Ulrich Wehling 1:35 min. That was enough to make silver in the end. Hans Hartleb, who was previously rated stronger, fell back to 5th place.

Large hill
The first of the two competitions in Oberhofer Kanzlersgrund presented almost the entire world class. After all, the GDR jumpers had first place in the prestigious Four Hills Tournament ; 2; 5; 8 and 10 among the top ten overall places. However, tour winner Rainer Schmidt could not boast so much and in the end took the ungrateful fourth place. Hans-Georg Aschenbach was the sovereign champion, vice ski flying world champion Heinz Wosipiwo unexpectedly took silver.
