The 22nd GDR ski championships took place from February 5th to 8th, 1970 in Brotterode , Thuringia . 162 athletes started in nine decisions in the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , two of which were team competitions. The championships were considered a dress rehearsal for the Nordic World Ski Championships, which began a week later in Štrbské Pleso in Czechoslovakia . On January 11, 1970, the champion of the men's 50 km in Neuhausen was chosen.

Men

15 km

Gerhard Grimmer was able to book his tenth championship title over the short distance with the men. In an almost relaxed manner, he dominated the race, which took place under good external conditions, and relegated Gert-Dietmar Klause to silver with a lead of over a minute. For the man from Klingenthal, the race went much better this time than over the 30 km, despite a fall and great exertion.

30 km

With temperatures around zero degrees, Gerhard Grimmer confirmed his good form and won the opening competition. After just ten kilometers, he had brought defending champion Gert-Dietmar Klause 50 seconds away. Klause, additionally handicapped by a fall, was unable to intervene in the race because of his smooth skis and only finished seventh. The performance of 20-year-old Wolfgang Scheler, who took a respectable fourth place in his first year in the men's category, only 11 seconds behind bronze, was rated positively.

50 km

In the 34-strong field, Gerhard Grimmer left no doubt about his title ambitions right from the start. Halfway through the distance, he was around three quarters of a minute ahead of defending champion Gert-Dietmar Klause. Only Grimmer's club-mate Axel Lesser caused some tension, as he was only 15 seconds behind Grimmer after three quarters of the route.

4 × 10km relay

After five years without a win, ASK Oberhof managed to win the relay again. The Klingenthalers were still tied with the Oberhofers after the first change. But the Klingenthaler Steffen Schulze was the second runner against the favored Axel Lesser and lost over a minute and a half. Gerhard Grimmer in third position then made the decision. He increased the lead on the Klingenthaler Meinel to over five minutes and was able to send goalkeeper Wolfgang Hössrich to the final lap with a calm mind. With Gert-Dietmar Klause he had the strongest Klingenthaler as opponent, but Klause could not melt away from the lead for more than two minutes. The relay win was the 4th championship title for Gerhard Grimmer in 1970. Two silver medals and one bronze medal at the World Cup were to follow.

Women

5 km

The race over the sprint route for women impressed with a close result. Co-favorite Anni Unger started half a minute ahead of defending champion Renate Fischer. At the finish, Karin Scheidel initially made people sit up and take notice with a good time, which, however, was undercut shortly after by Anni Unger by almost 3 seconds. Shortly afterwards Renate Fischer crossed the finish line, who was able to take eight seconds off Unger and thus defended her championship title over 5 km. In the end, the gap between 1st and 5th place was no more than half a minute. This gave the coaches hope for a strong World Cup relay. And this optimism was rewarded with relay silver in Štrbské Pleso.

The four-year dominance of the Oberwiesenthal relay was also broken for women. However, adverse circumstances also favored the success. Renate Fischer broke a ski and as a result she ran with different waxed boards. For the first time since 1965, the Klingenthal squadron was able to win gold again.

Nordic combination

Already after jumping Lothar Düring was ahead. However, his lead of 4 points on defending champion Karl-Heinz Luck, which corresponded to a time of 20 seconds, was not exactly lush, so the experts predicted Luck as the new title holder. But after half the distance he had made up a full 4 seconds on Düring. In the end, Johanngeorgenstadt from Düring won his second championship title with a 34-second lead in his last competition season.

Also in the competition on the normal hill, which took place on the Oberhofer Thüringenschanze, large hill master Horst Queck could not be defeated by the remaining 49 participants. And this time the lead was even higher with 17 points. Last year's champion Jürgen Dommerich showed with second place that his surprising championship title from last year was not a flash in the pan.

World Cup line-up

Following the championships, the team for the Nordic World Ski Championships was announced. The biggest surprises came with the combiners, where two youngsters, Hans Hartleb and Günther Deckert, were nominated. The GDR team won 4 medals, three times silver and one bronze, all in cross-country skiing. The jumpers giving cause for hope, however, disappointed.
