Men
15 km
Kuno Werner, who was already decorated with championship laurels from the 30 km run, was able to win gold over the short distance and thus defend his championship title. However, he became a serious competitor in Röder in Klingenthal, who was only 18 seconds short of gold. A whole armada of Oberhof army athletes lined up behind Röder. The best combiner for which this competition was used as a run was Günter Flauger.

Nordic combination
After cross-country skiing, last year's junior champion Günter Flauger led the surprisingly strong Horst Bätz from BSG tractor Steinheid and last year's champion Siegfried Böhme. The jumping, which experience has shown to be the stronger sub-discipline of the combined athletes in those years, was held the day after in front of 5000 spectators on the Schanze des Friedens on Geisingberg . In view of a blunt run-out, the competition was characterized by many falls, Günter Flauger fell on the first jump. With his third jump with the daily best distance of 68.5 m, he made the event even more exciting. In the end, he was 0.6 points short of the title, Siegfried Böhme was able to repeat his success.

Ski jumping
40,000 spectators flocked to the Geisingberg on the last day of the competition, mainly to see the top trio Helmut Recknagel, Harry Glaß and Werner Lesser. At the beginning of the year, the GDR jumpers had already made people sit up and take notice when Helmut Recknagel was the first GDR representative to win the Four Hills Tournament . Werner Lesser was fourth on the tour. In the championship, however, the three-time GDR champion Harry Glaß prevailed with the largest daily distance and the stylistically cleanest jumps. Recknagel noticed the three-week training failure due to flu, he never hit the jump in any of his attempts. Werner Lesser won bronze.
