from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 13th GDR ski championships took place from February 16 to 20, 1961 in Oberhof , Thuringia . In eight decisions in the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , two of which were team competitions, athletes competed. The championship decision in men's 50 km cross-country skiing had already been held on January 22, 1961 in the Harz winter sports resort of Hasselfelde .

Men

15 km

The 35-year-old Kuno Werner from Oberhof won the first men's cross-country competition. The much younger Klingenthal competitors Röder and Weidlich could not seriously endanger him.

30 km

In the absence of defending champion Kuno Werner, 50 participants tackled the last championship competition in good external conditions. Material problems had an enormous influence on the course of the race. So the two Klingenthalers Weidlich and Seidel had to give up because of a broken ski. And the winner Enno Röder also ran from kilometer 23 with a broken left ski at the binding, so that Werner Haase from Oberhofer still made it, but was only able to reduce the Klingenthaler's lead to half a minute. The battle for the bronze medal was also exciting, in the end Kretzschmann from Oberhof had the better end for himself with 18 seconds ahead of club-mate Jankowski.

50 km

The first championship title went to old master Kuno Werner in difficult snow conditions. For a long time, Heinz Seidel from Klingenthal was in the lead, but, plagued by cramps, he had to pull it off and became runner-up two and a half minutes behind. In general, the competition demanded everything from the participants, more than half of the 48 runners who had started gave up. So it is not surprising that the tenth place was almost three quarters of an hour behind the winner.

4 × 10 km relay

It was clear that the relay race would be a duel between Oberhof-Klingenthal. The fact that the nominally weaker third season in Oberhof led initially was a surprise. However, the race was decided in third position. Helmut Weidlich from Klingenthal overtook Werner Haase as well as Alfred Recknagel, who had been leading up to that point, and handed over to the final runner Enno Röder with a large margin. And this did not let the distance to Kuno Werner get any smaller, especially since Werner resigned after knowing the intermediate results. In the end, last year's winners from Klingenthal were able to secure the relay title again with a lead of almost two minutes.

Women

5 km

The women's short distance was part of the program for the first time, as the FIS had already decided to include it in the program of the next World Championships in Zakopane. Renate Dannhauer, who moved from Oberwiesenthal to Zella-Mehlis, became the first champion on this route. Runner-up Sonnhilde Kallus suffered a broken ski and crossed the finish line almost a minute behind.

Last year's champion Renate Dannhauer managed to defend the title in temperatures that were almost summery, according to the press. This was favored by a ski break in her worst competitor Sonnhilde Kallus, who lost valuable seconds as a result.

3x5 km relay

In the women's relay it was already clear that it would be a duel between the teams from Zella-Mehlis and Klingenthal. The race rolled back and forth. If Zella-Mehlis was in the lead after the first change, Karen Jahns from Klingenthal was the first to hand over at the second change. But her club mate Sonnhilde Kallus could not stand against Renate Dannhauer again. Dannhauer celebrated her third championship title.

Nordic combination

After the jump, the Brotteroder Herzer was first in front of the armada of the Klingenthal combined athletes, led by Manfred Meinhold and last year's champion Günter Flauger. However, only 6 points separated Herzer from Flauger. The real surprise, however, was junior Dieter Bokeloh, who was better than the leading Karl-Heinz Herzer after two jumps of 71 m and 222 points each. Bokeloh later became a special jumper. There was no stopping Flauger in cross-country skiing, especially since Herzer couldn't keep up and fell far behind. Ultimately, last year's winner Günter Flauger was able to defend his title. The constant Manfred Meinhold was able to maintain his second place after jumping, club mate Rainer Dietel pushed himself up to third place. After 10 km of cross-country skiing, the junior Dieter Bokeloh became junior champion in the Nordic combined on Saturday morning.

Ski jumping

The special jumping on the Oberhofer Thüringenschanze was held again on two days with two rounds each, of which the best three were included in the evaluation at the end. And after the first day a sensation loomed. The only 18-year-old combined athlete Dieter Bokeloh from ASK Vorwärts Brotterode, who in the morning had become junior champion in the combined ski class after 10 km, duped the top athletes around Olympic champion Helmut Recknagel and was ahead after 2 jumps. Behind them were Werner Lesser with 3.5 and Helmut Recknagel with 4.5 points behind. On the second day of the jump, 20,000 spectators wanted to see the possible sensation. However, Werner Lesser passed Bokeloh, who, to the surprise of many, was able to celebrate the runner-up title. Helmut Recknagel had to give up his hopes for a medal due to a fall, as last year's champion Veit Keuert got along better on the second day and pushed himself forward to the bronze place.

Medal table

The medal table of 1961 showed a somewhat unusual picture, as the Saxon performance base Oberwiesenthal remained completely medalless. Especially the change of the three-time champion Renate Dannhauer to Zella-Mehlis had left a big gap in the Saxons.
