Grete Hess

Grete Hess (actually Paulina Luise Margaritha Hess ) (born July 4, 1894 in Stans , † 1976 ibid. ) Was a Swiss artist , writer and radio presenter . In the 1930s she moderated handicraft programs for children on Radio Beromünster .

Life

Grete Hess was the daughter of the Stans dentist Paul Hess. Her ancestors on her mother's side came from the artist family Deschwanden. Her mother died in her early childhood. At the age of 10 she discovered her love for the fine arts in the voluntary drawing school. Her father sent her to the Lucerne Business School. After completing her training, she worked in Zurich for the Swiss Bank Corporation and then for Zurich Accident Insurance. After eight years she finally gave up her commercial activities and tried her hand at other handicrafts in addition to painting and drawing. From then on she lived from teaching, small exhibitions and a few commissions. After the death of her father, she returned to Stans in 1929.

Biographical short film

Filmmaker Thais Odermatt from Stans produced a short film about Grete Hess on behalf of Frauenspuren Nidwalden. Various contemporary witnesses tell of their experiences with the artist. The whole thing is accompanied by archive material. The short film premiered in the Chäslager in Stans.
