GDR Ski Championships 1971

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 23rd GDR Ski Championships took place from February 19 to 22, 1971 in Johanngeorgenstadt , Saxony . In eight decisions in the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , two of which were team competitions, athletes competed. In the period from February 7 to 14, 1971, some championship participants took part in the International Winter Sports Week in Sapporo , Japan , the venue for the 1972 Winter Olympics. Due to the short break before the championships, some athletes did not take part in the first competitions. On January 9, 1973, the men's 50 km champion was crowned in Bockau .

Men

15 km

Even over 15 km, Grimmer lived up to his role as favorite, even though his worst rival Gert-Dietmar Klause did not compete due to bronchitis. This time Grimmers club mate Axel Lesser was able to put himself in the limelight and won the silver medal. Rainer Groß again won bronze.

30 km

In the first running competition, Gerhard Grimmer was able to forget his defeat over 50 km. After just 10 km he caught up with the two runners who had started before him. Grimmer then ran confidently towards his 12th championship title, this time not plagued by cramps. Gert-Dietmar Klause, on the other hand, also started in Sapporo like Grimmer, had to give up after 13 km due to breathing difficulties, as did Axel Lesser, who was not really fit into the race. This cleared the way for the Klingenthaler Hessler and Groß, who won the other medals.

50 km

The ski marathon organized by BSG Motor Bockau was shaped by a wide variety of weather conditions. While it was two degrees below zero at the start at 9:00 a.m., about three hours later it was 10 degrees plus at the finish line. Thus the use of wax turned into a lottery game. The end result looked accordingly. Quite unexpectedly, Eberhard Klessen, who only switched to ASK Oberhof in 1969, won the race. The Klingenthalers Stützner and Groß were not necessarily expected to be candidates for a medal beforehand either. Last year's winner Gerhard Grimmer crossed the finish line more than eight minutes behind, plagued by cramps. Co-favorite Gert-Dietmar Klause even put his skis aside after waxing and binding problems and gave up.

4 × 10 km relay

The season decision again offered everything that viewers could hope for from such competitions. Last year's winner and favorite ASK Oberhof was surprisingly half a minute behind the Klingenthal relay after the first change. But the second Oberhof runner, Axel Lesser, caught up with Gert-Dietmar Klause, who was debilitated by illness, after just 2 km and handed over to Gerhard Grimmer with a ten-second lead. He dueled with Gerd Heßler, who, to the surprise of the experts, was able to keep the gap relatively small at half a minute. And after 5 km, final runner Rainer Groß had almost caught up with Oberhof Eberhard Klessen, at the finish he had run out 37 seconds ahead. In view of the individual results and a weakened Gert-Dietmar Klause, the outcome of the race was not expected.

Women

5 km

After renouncing the 10 km, the favorites Anni Unger and Renate Fischer started and immediately put their stamp on the race. However, Anni Unger won a little unexpectedly and not Renate Fischer, who was champion over the 5 km in the two previous years.

In the first women's race, the competitions in Sapporo had an even more serious impact. The two Anna Unger and Renate Fischer who started there did not even start the race. Gabriele Haupt was able to win gold, but Christine Philipp remained close on her heels, only 7 seconds behind.

3x5 km relay

There was also a somewhat unexpected development in the women's relay. The relay vice world champion Gabriele Haupt was relegated to second place by Christine Philipp from Oberwiesenthal, 16 seconds behind. And in second position of the Oberwiesenthaler relay was Renate Fischer, a vice world champion. But the Klingenthaler Christel Thiel was able to reduce the gap to just under two seconds with the fastest running time of the competition. And the third runner from Klingenthal, none other than the third vice world champion Anni Unger, could not hold a candle to the young Margitta Rösch. In the end, the Klingenthal relay team won the championship with a comfortable lead of almost three quarters of a minute.

Nordic combination

After the jumping, the European Junior Champion Ulrich Wehling led ahead of Hans Hartleb and Karl-Heinz Luck. The favored Luck was 70 seconds behind Hartleb. In cross-country skiing, Wehling fell with an indisputable mileage (14th place) to 9th overall, while the fight for the title took on dramatic features. The experts had actually expected that Luck would catch up. In the end, one second was missing and thus 0.2 points to victory and thus the 20-year-old Zella-Mehlis teammate Hans Hartleb won the competition. The achievements of local combiners Joachim Groß and Christoph Beyer were also remarkable. With the second-best running time, Groß moved up from 13th to fourth place and was only two points behind bronze. Beyer improved from tenth to sixth.

Ski jumping

Normal hill

In the last decision, the young athletes caused a sensation once again. On the one hand, it was Hans-Georg Aschenbach who, after a long injury, showed his skills and won his first championship. On the other hand, it was the combiner Ulrich Wehling, who even led for a long time and came in fourth in the end.

Large hill

The first jumping competition started without the injured defending champion Horst Queck . The mixed performances had already been indicated in the previous Four Hills Tournament and continued in the championship. Rainer Schmidt won gold, club mate Heinz Schmidt won silver. Manfred Wolf, who was heavily criticized by the press for his landings ( amateurish ), took bronze. The weak level was also confirmed by the fact that Bernd Karwofsky, who has already retired from competitive sports, achieved a respectable 5th place, starting for HSG PI Zwickau.

Medal table

The SC Dynamo Klingenthal was able to build on its strong runners and won almost half of all plaques with twelve medals. Especially through the jumpers and combiners, SC Motor Zella-Mehlis was able to win the second most medals. The championship was disappointing for the athletes from Fichtelberg. Not a championship title could be brought to Oberwiesenthal.
