GDR ski championships 1966

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 18th GDR ski championships took place from January 25th to 30th, 1966 in Brotterode , Thuringia . In ten decisions of the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , two of which were team competitions, athletes competed. Due to the onset of the thaw, the running competitions had to be relocated to the so-called Grenzwiese on the Kleiner Inselsberg at an altitude of 725 m. The championships were also the last qualifying competitions for the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo, which took place from February 17, 1966.

After his result over 30 km, Gerhard Grimmer had to make up for a lot over the short run. In thick fog, however, the Klingenthal duo Röder / Weidlich was in front halfway through, while Grimmer was just behind. At the finish, Helmut Weidlich was celebrated as the winner for a long time until Grimmer rushed up and ran a time 13 seconds faster. After two championship titles in the previous year, Grimmer was able to celebrate the third.

30 km

In the men's opening competition, Enno Röder was able to forget last year's defeat. In 1965, Oberhof athletes were ahead. But this time Röder was already in the lead after 10 kilometers, and he did not give it up until the finish line. Club mate Helmut Weidlich looked like the runner-up for a long time, but had to let go of the last 10 kilometers after a weakness and finished fourth. The surprise was the Zinnwald biathlete Dieter Speer. Speer, who came from athletics and has only been a biathlete for 18 months, was runner-up in the end, half a minute behind. The 20-year-old young talent Gert-Dietmar Klause won bronze, while last year's champion Gerhard Grimmer had grown together and took an indisputable 26th place out of 61 starters.

50 km

The competition, which was included in the program for the first time, impressed with its exciting course. In the meantime, it was not the cross-country specialists who were ahead, but biathlete Dieter Ritter. However, after more than 35 kilometers it slowly had to be torn down and Helmut Weidlich pushed himself forward unstoppably. After 44 kilometers, Weidlich was 9 seconds ahead of Ritter, and he was 7 seconds ahead of Albrecht. Weidlich was able to extend his lead over the last kilometers, so that at the finish he was celebrated as champion with almost a minute ahead of second-placed Kurt Albrecht. Albrecht was able to secure his nomination for the World Championship through an energy performance in the last competition of the championships.

4 × 10 km relay

The season decision ended with a result that nobody would have expected before. If the victory of the Klingenthaler relay team around the top runners Weidlich and Röder as well as the up-and-coming talent Klause was to be expected, the relay of the still young SC Harz caused a bang. The relay, trained by Werner Moring, was runner-up and, for example, left the strong biathlete relay from Zinnwald behind. The second big surprise was the fifth place of the previous year's champions from Oberhof. The handicap that Kurt Albrecht only had to run for a kilometer on one ski because of a broken ski certainly played a major role. But even without this mishap, the experts did not see the season in the constitution to defend the title.

Double champion Christine Nestler also won the last women's running competition, making her the most successful athlete in the championships. Renate Köhler completed the Oberwiesenthal double success.

10 km

Last year's winner Christine Nestler was able to defend her title. However, it was only seventh after 5 kilometers. Nestler was only able to win the race with a final sprint, aided by a steep descent. Her fiercest competitor, Renate Dannhauer, fell on the last lap on the descent and lost the decisive seconds in the battle for the championship. Elfriede Spiegelhauer, two-time Olympic participant and, at 31 years of age, the oldest starter in the field of 26, took a remarkable fourth place.

3 × 5 km relay

The relay decision for women also brought a surprise. After five years of dominance by Klingenthal, the women from Oberwiesenthal managed to become relay champions for the first time. Despite three potential World Cup candidates, the Klingenthal runners were left behind especially against Christine Nestler and Renate Köhler.

Nordic combination

After the jump, a bigger surprise loomed, the favorites, on the other hand, found themselves in the lower positions. 19-year-old talent Ralph Pöhland from SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal was ahead. One of the favorites Winterlich was in 6th place, last year's champion Münzner in 8th place, followed by Weißpflog and Flauger. However, there were only a good 20 points between places 1 and 10. In cross-country skiing, however, Weißpflog showed its class. Started 90 seconds behind Pöhland, he took 4 minutes from the youngster. Pöhland ended up in 5th place. Joachim Winterlich also got bronze, old master Flauger only narrowly missed this medal. However, the competition for the previous year's champion Günter Münzner was disappointing. He couldn't improve after jumping and was passed even further back.

Ski jumping

Normal hill

On the ski jumping facility, which was prepared with snow cement because of the spring-like temperatures, there was the expected duel between defending champion Dieter Neuendorf, who had just missed the overall victory on the previous Four Hills Tournament, and the ski flying world record holder at that time, Peter Lesser. This led even after the first round, but Neuendorf was able to narrowly win the competition in the second round, mainly due to better posture marks.

Large hill

29 athletes took part in the competition on the large hill in Oberhof Kanzlersgrund. Once again, Dieter Neuendorf asserted himself as a master, primarily through his stylistically clean jumps. Nevertheless, the competition in front of 6,000 spectators was exciting, in the end just five points separated the gold from the bronze rank. Dieter Scharf confirmed his good form, which he had already shown on the normal hill with a new hill record, and came third. Co-favorite Peter Lesser was unable to intervene in the title fight due to a fall.

Medal table

The SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal was the most successful sports club, especially thanks to Christine Nestler. The cross-country skier was the most successful athlete of the championships with 3 gold medals. The short-lived SC Harz was able to record its only championship medal in 1966.

World Cup line-up

Following the championships, the team for the Nordic World Ski Championships was announced. Due to the qualification guidelines, it was sometimes very tight and one or the other experienced athlete got the short straw. Combined Günter Flauger had to admit defeat to young Karl-Heinz Luck by only 0.2 points. Cross-country skier Gudrun Schmidt was 11 seconds short of a World Cup ticket.
