GDR ski championships 1974

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 26th GDR Ski Championships took place from January 31 to February 3, 1974 in Klingenthal , Saxony . In nine decisions of the Nordic ski disciplines cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined , two of which were team competitions, athletes competed. As early as December 30, 1973, the champions on the long distances had been determined. In Hasselfelde the competitions were held over 50 kilometers for men and, as a premiere, over 15 kilometers for women. This joined the international trend of letting women run over longer distances. The championships were considered the last major test before the Nordic World Ski Championships , which took place in February 1974 in Falun, Sweden . From there, the GDR returned as the most successful nation with 5 gold and 6 silver medals.

Men

15 km

The second men's running competition was hard to beat in terms of drama and ended with one of the tightest decisions of all championships. After the unsatisfactory 10th place over 30 km, the Klingenthaler Gert-Dietmar Klause wanted to win a championship title over half the distance. And after 13 kilometers, things were still looking good, ten seconds ahead of his worst rival, Grimmer. But in the final sprint, the Oberhofer was able to gain and was in the end with a wafer-thin 0.8 seconds before Klause.

30 km

The 1973 champion over 30 kilometers, Gerhard Grimmer, did not contest victory this time. Only started in thirteenth, despite the usual half-minute start intervals, he crossed the finish line in second place. Hartmut Freyer from Oberwiesenthal, who was only three seconds apart from Grimmer, remained the toughest competitor for at least the first ten kilometers. At the finish, however, Grimmer had extended the lead to almost a minute.

50 km

On the outskirts of the Harz town of Hasselfelde, the 25 starters ran 5 loops of 10 kilometers. Despite this distance, the winner was only less than a minute away from the fifth placed. If Gerhard Grimmer's victory was still expected despite two ski breaks, Gerd-Dietmar Klause's performance for bronze was already sensational. After half the distance, still lying two and a half minutes behind any medal ranks, Klause put in the fastest final lap and remained more than one and a half minutes below the final lap time of the winner Gerhard Grimmer.

4 × 10 km relay

Weak substitute and starting with a junior, the previous year's winners from Oberhof had no chance against the Klingenthaler relay team around Gert-Dietmar Klause and had to admit defeat with a clear gap of more than 5 minutes. So Klause could still win a championship title.

Women

5 km

Petra Hinze was also able to win gold again in the women's second race decision. And this time, too, last year's champion Sigrun Krause remained without precious metal. After the somewhat surprising 4th place over the 15 km four weeks earlier, the 16-year-old Marion Büchner from Zella Mehlis won her first championship medal with bronze.

At the first women's competition, Petra Hinze from Oberwiesenthal was champion and last year's champion Sigrun Krause, who took fourth place, was dethroned.

15 km

The distance of 15 kilometers, run for the first time, was not unexpectedly decided by Barbara Petzold with a half-minute lead. The only 16-year-old Marion Büchner from SC Motor Zella-Mehlis made fourth place for a sign of attention among the 23 starters.

4x5 km relay

What had already been suggested on the individual routes was confirmed in the relay decision. In terms of density, the runners from Zella-Mehlis were the strongest, because despite double champion Petra Hinze, the relay from Oberwiesenthal was relegated to second place with over a minute ahead.

Nordic combination

After the jumping, there was still nothing to suggest that Olympic champion and previous year's champion Ulrich Wehling should have nothing to do with the outcome of the competition in the end. The ambitious Eberhard Reum led somewhat surprisingly. Wehling was 12.5 points behind in 6th place. But before the running competition, Wehling gave back his start number, officially because of a bad stomach. So it came down to a three-way battle between Zimmermann, Hartleb and Deckert, which last year's runner-up Bernd Zimmermann won with a wafer-thin 0.365 points.

Normal hill

The freshly crowned Four Hills Tournament winner Hans-Georg Aschenbach didn't let anything go wrong on the newly opened Fichtelbergschanze in Oberwiesenthal and won the competition on the normal hill. The local hero Dietrich Kampf gave him a close competition, in which he had to admit defeat with 4.3 points despite the hill record of 89 m at the time.

Hans-Georg Aschenbach could not be defeated on the large hill in Klingenthal either. This time, however, he relegated runner-up Dietrich Kampf a little more clearly with a 9.2 point lead. Aschenbach's brother Dietmar went to bronze.

Medal table

Only thanks to more silver medals won, SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal was in the lead in the end. However, if you add the ASK Vorwärts from Brotterode to the ASK Oberhof, since it was the Oberhof branch of the combined athletes and ski jumpers, the army athletes were the most successful with 5 gold medals.
