Barbara Petzold-Beyer (born August 8, 1955 in Hammerunterwiesenthal ) is a former German cross-country skier who started for the GDR in the 1970s and 1980s .

Life

The daughter of cooperative farmers attended high school with a high school diploma. In 1970 she became a member of the Free German Youth (FDJ). From 1976 to 1978 she studied law at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig and from 1980 at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

From 1976 to 1981 she was the successor candidate of the People's Chamber of the GDR. During the 8th and 9th electoral period she was a member of the People's Chamber for the FDJ from 1981 to 1986. From 1976 to 1981 she was a member of the Culture Committee and from 1986 to 1990 was a member of the Mandate Review Committee of the People's Chamber. From 1977 to 1989 she was a member of the SED . From 1982 she worked as an employee in the department of youth issues, physical culture and sport at the council of the Karl-Marx-Stadt district .

Petzold has been working as a lawyer since April 1990. In 2005 she resigned from her job as a referee for the FIS World Federation .

In 1980 she received the Silver Patriotic Order of Merit .

Athletic career

Petzold began training in cross-country skiing in 1967 and started from 1969 to 1982 for SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal under coaches such as Erich Linke, Heinz Nestler and Christine Nestler . She had her first international success at the Junior European Championships in 1971 in Nesselwang . There she won the silver medal with the relay. At the 1974 World Championships in Falun , she won the 10 km and the silver medal with the relay. In addition, she was fourth there over 5 km. The following year she won third place with the relay at the Svenska Skidspelen and the Lahti Ski Games . At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , she won the silver medal with the relay. She also ran there on 11th place over 5 km and seventh place over 10 km. In March 1976 she won the Svenska Skidspelen over 10 km and with the relay and the Lahti Ski Games over 10 km. With the relay she came in second place in Lahti. The following year she took third place over 10 km and second place with the relay at the Svenska Skidspelen and third place with the relay at the Lahti Ski Games. At the World Championships in Lahti in February 1978 , she again won the silver medal with the relay. In the individual races there she ran on 17th place over 10 km, 15th place over 5 km and ninth place over 20 km. At the 1980 Winter Olympics , she won gold with the relay and over 10 km, becoming the first German Olympic champion in cross-country skiing. In addition, she achieved fourth place over 5 km there. In the 1980/81 season she triumphed in Lahti over 5 km and 10 km. In addition, she ran over 5 km in third place in Klingenthal and in Oslo over 5 km in second place and thus reached ninth place in the overall World Cup . She completed her last international race at the 1982 World Championships in Oslo. There she won the silver medal with the relay. She won 23 medals at the GDR ski championships . She was champion five times with the relay of SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal (1973, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1982) and over 20 km (1975, 1977-1980), twice over 10 km (1977, 1981) and once over 5 km ( 1981) and 15 km (1974).
