Kristin Størmer Steira (born April 30, 1981 in Mo i Rana ) is a former Norwegian cross-country skier .

Career

2001 to 2005

On December 1, 2001, at the age of 20, Steira made her international debut at the FIS races in Gålå . After good results there and in Ål , she started in January 2002 at the Norwegian Nordic Ski Championships in Høydalsmo . There she reached 25th place over 5 km freestyle, before she was able to secure 18th place in the pursuit over 10 km and fourth place in the individual over 15 km. After two top 10 placements in Molde and further top 20 placements at FIS races in Hommelvik and Granåsen , Steira made her cross-country skiing debut on March 16, 2002 at the end of the 2001/02 season is Oslo around Holmenkollbakken World Cup . With 46th place, however, she fell short of expectations and did not win any World Cup points. After rather mediocre placements at other national championships in Vang in April, she found herself at the beginning of the 2002/03 season in the Cross-Country Continental Cup , where she reached ninth place in the first race in Gåsbu . She won the second race in the pursuit over 10 km. Then a month later she was allowed to start the World Cup in Kawgolowo , where she just missed the points with 33rd place. She won the Continental Cup race in Stockikik that followed a week later . In the second race over 10 km in classic style, she was again on the podium with second place.

Six days after her success in stock exchange, Steira started in the World Cup race in Nové Město na Moravě . With ninth place over 10 km in free style, she not only achieved her first World Cup point win, but also her first top 10 placement in this series. In the relay competition that took place one day later, she finished second with Anita Moen , Marit Bjørgen and Hilde Pedersen. Despite this success, Steira started again in the Continental Cup in February 2003. She was already on the podium again in the first race in Valdidentro . Shortly afterwards she was at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2003 on the same route in the 2x5 km double pursuit at the end of 28th and reached 25th place in the individual over 30 km in free style. In the World Cups after the World Championships in Oslo and Lahti , she reached 19th place. End of the season she stood in the relay in Swedish Falun again on the podium. In the overall World Cup ranking, she finished the season in 42nd place.

The 2003/04 season began after a 15th place in the individual over 15 km in Beitostølen with a victory in the relay competition on the same route. After some mediocre individual placements in singles, she repeated the relay result with the team on January 11, 2004 in Otepää . Also a good six weeks later, the squadron was in the Swedish Umea not to beat. A podium in an individual competition, Steira was denied until the end of the season.

In the following 2004/05 season , Steira was able to show a significant increase in performance and in Ramsau am Dachstein was second for the first time in a long time on a podium in an individual World Cup. On January 22, 2005, she achieved her first individual World Cup victory in the 2x7.5 km double pursuit in Pragelato . At the Norwegian Championships in Lillehammer in 2005 , she won silver in the individual over 10 km in free style behind Hilde Petersen .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2005 , Steira won the gold medal in the 4 × 5 km relay and bronze in the 15 km double pursuit together with Vibeke Skofterud , Hilde Petersen and Marit Bjørgen. In the individual, she was tenth over 10 km in free style. In the following World Cups, Steira fell short of expectations and was unable to achieve any further podium positions.

2006 to 2010

In the 2005/06 season Steira modest start. It was not until the World Cup race in Canmore that she was able to place in the top ten again. In the following World Cup in Nové Město na Moravě, she narrowly missed the podium and finished fourth. At the 2006 Winter Olympics , Steira only narrowly missed the medals in the double pursuit, the singles and the mass start over 30 km and finished fourth. Even with the season she did not get past fifth place. At the end of the season in Sapporo , Japan , she made it onto the podium again. After she first successfully competed in several FIS races in November 2006, she started again in the World Cup on November 18. In Gällivare she missed the top ten in the 10 km classic individual, but was able to celebrate another safe victory one day later with the relay in front of Germany and Finland. For the Tour de Ski 2006/2007 Steira was in good shape again and won the stage in Oberstdorf , among other things . In the end, she reached seventh place in the Tour de Ski overall ranking.

At the Norwegian Championships in Grova in 2007 , she started the 15 km pursuit and won silver. After another podium with the relay in Davos , Steira started at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo . There she won bronze in the 15 km pursuit. Two days later, she narrowly missed the medal ranks in the individual over 10 km freestyle and came in fourth. In return, she managed to win the bronze medal again on March 1st in the relay. She finally completed the world championship with a silver medal in the individual over 30 km, where she only had to admit defeat to the Finn Virpi Kuitunen .

After she was able to keep her performances stable until November 2007 without a podium but with good results in the World Cup, she was on the podium again in December in Davos. She was also successful in the season with a second place. The Tour de Ski 2007/2008 was rather mixed for Steira, so that in the end it only reached eleventh place in the overall ranking. In the rest of the 2007/08 World Cup season , too, she did not manage to make it into the top five in the individual disciplines. In February, however, she achieved another victory in Falun with the relay.

In the 2008/09 season Steira launched successful again. In December in La Clusaz, for the first time in over a year, she achieved a single success in the World Cup. She was also on the podium again with the relay. After a rather mixed Tour de Ski 2008/2009 , she finished it on a good ninth place. Shortly afterwards, she won bronze in the 15 km pursuit at the Norwegian Nordic Ski Championships in Vind.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , Steira won the silver medal in the 15 km doubles pursuit after she was sixth in the 10 km classic individual. With the relay, she just barely missed another podium finish with a fourth place. However, the World Cup races after the World Championship were less successful for Steira. In some cases, she missed the podium significantly. Despite this drop in performance, she was in ninth place in the overall World Cup ranking. She was also in a good fourth place in the Distance World Cup.

She started the 2009/10 World Cup season successfully with several top 10 placements. The 2009/2010 Tour de Ski also went much better than in previous years, so that it was fifth overall in the series. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Størmer Steira won the gold medal with the 4x5 km relay. In the individual disciplines she achieved good top 10 placements and was only beaten in fourth behind the medal ranks in the pursuit race over 15 km. At the end of the season, Steira won again with the relay in Lahti and was on the podium after the 30 km race in Oslo. Her most successful season to date, she finished sixth in the overall World Cup standings.

2010 to 2015

On March 27, 2010 she won the national title over 30 km at the Norwegian Nordic Championships in Tolga . At the FIS races in April 2010, she was on the podium in all races without exception. She started the 2010/11 World Cup season with fourth place in Gällivare. After a victory with the relay on the same route, four weeks later she was on the podium again in a single race in La Clusaz.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 she won the world title with the Norwegian relay, but had to admit defeat in the individual disciplines. In the World Cup races that followed, Steira also found it difficult to build on the good performances of previous years. Also at the Norwegian Nordic Ski Championships 2011 in Kvaløysletta , she missed the medal ranks in the 30 km individual, if only just barely.

In the World Cup season 2011/12 Steira successfully launched with a fifth place in the individual in Sjusjøen and a relay victory at the same track the following day. However, this success was the last until January 2012. In January she achieved bronze in the 15 km skiathlon at the Norwegian Championships in Voss. At the end of the season, Steira again achieved several top 10 placements, which brought her to 14th place overall. In April 2012 she won the Haukelirennet over 32 km freestyle.

In the first World Cup races for the 2012/13 World Cup season , Steira was once again able to achieve top 10 placements and surprisingly achieved third place in the overall ranking of the 2012/2013 Tour de Ski . After a relay victory in La Clusaz and an individual success in Sochi on the route of the 2014 Winter Olympics , she started at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , where she was able to defend her relay world title in Oslo 2011. In the skiathlon, she narrowly missed the medal ranks with fourth place and landed in ninth place in the 10 km and 30 km individual. At the World Cup finals in Stockholm and Falun she came in 25th place and finished the season in sixth place in the overall World Cup and third place in the Distance World Cup.

At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Steira came 14th overall at the Nordic Opening . It was followed by a victory in the relay in Lillehammer . After poor performance at the Tour de Ski 2013/14 , she became Norwegian champion in skiathlon in January 2014. At the following Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 , she won bronze in the 30 km mass start race. At the end of the season she finished ninth at the World Cup finals in Falun and thus reached 19th place in the overall World Cup. In the 2014/15 season, she was only able to complete her first race in January due to an injury. She missed the World Cup in Falun and ended her career after the season.

Cross-country run

After the end of her cross- country skiing career , she became Norwegian cross-country champion and was nominated for the 2015 European Cross-Country Championships , where she finished 39th.
