Kawgolowo ( Russian Кавголово ; Finnish Kaukola ) is a winter sports resort in the municipality of Toksowo in Russia , about 100 km north of Saint Petersburg . In 2007 there were 77 inhabitants.

history

As early as the 19th century, the municipality was known as a ski area under the name of Finnish Switzerland . At the beginning of the 20th century, the place changed several times between Finland and the Soviet Union. Until 1939, however, almost exclusively Finns lived there. In 1939 they were deported and the place, together with Toksowo, was finally assigned to the Soviet Union .

As early as 1937, the first ski jump was built in the area, which was already equipped with good cross-country ski trails. The trampoline Kawgolowo hill, which is still standing today, was built between 1958 and 1959. On the Adlerberg ( Orlinaja Gora ) there is now a slope with artificial snow-making facilities, a children's slope and an ice rink in addition to several prepared natural slopes.

Kawgolowo with its slopes and jumps has been the venue for Nordic ski competitions of the International Ski Federation since the 1970s , such as the Cross-Country World Cup and the Nordic Combined World Cup . Initially, however, Kawgolovo was referred to as Leningrad or later Saint Petersburg in the official result tables. It was not until later in the 1990s that the actual name was gradually introduced, although the wrong name can still be found today. The place was in 1973 the venue for the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in cross-country skiing and Nordic combined . In addition, the Junior European Championships, which Chernyshev won, were held on the hill.
