The 47th Nordic World Ski Championships took place from February 18 to March 1, 2009 in the Czech city of Liberec . This was decided on June 3, 2004 during the FIS Congress in Miami (USA). Liberec prevailed in a battle vote with 11: 4 votes against the Norwegian capital Oslo .
This is the second time that a Czech city has hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1925 , the competitions were held in Janské Lázně .
At the 2009 World Championships, women's ski jumping competitions and a combined mass start competition were held for the first time.
Competitions
In cross-country skiing there were four individual and two team competitions for women and men. In the pursuit races held as a double pursuit (15 km women, 30 km men) and the relays, partial distances were run in both classic and free technique. In the other races, as is customary at the Nordic World Ski Championships, the technology has been varied compared to the previous 2007 World Championships . The sprint competitions and the long-distance mass start races (30 km women, 50 km men) were run in freestyle, the team sprints and the medium-distance individual start races (10 km women, 15 km men) in the classic technique.
In the Nordic Combined , the discipline reforms carried out for the World Cup were also applied to the World Championships. Instead of the previously usual individual and sprint competitions, there were now individual competitions with only one jump each from the large and normal hill followed by 10 km of cross-country skiing. In addition, a mass start competition was held for the first time at this world championship. As in the early years of Nordic Combined, the first discipline was running - but only over 10 km and as a mass start (previously 15 km and interval start). The normal hill was then jumped twice, with both jumps being included in the rating. This competition variant was later abolished in the course of the reform, but remained in the World Cup program because the program sequence had already been determined. This competition did not take place at future world championships. A team competition was also held again.
In ski jumping , a world champion was determined for the first time, after women had previously participated in junior world championships since 2006. The competition was held on the normal hill. For the men, there were individual competitions on the normal and large hill as well as a team competition on the large hill.
Attendees
Including substitutes who only took part in the training rounds, 589 athletes from 61 countries were registered for the World Championships. Ultimately, 549 athletes from 61 countries took part in the competitions.

Venues
The cross-country skiing competitions were held in the Vesec district in the south of Liberec. A cross-country ski trail area was created there especially for the world championships. This was only completed shortly before the world championship, with test competitions previously held there had to be switched to provisional routes. In the area there is a ski stadium that can hold 30,000 people. There are two routes for the sprint competitions, with lengths of 1.2 and 1.5 kilometers. There are also two 3.75-kilometer routes, both of which can be shortened to 3.3 and 2.5 kilometers. By combining these routes, which come together in the stadium, all required distances can be achieved.
The jumping competitions took place on the ski jumps on Ještěd . These have been in existence since 1966 and have already hosted World Cup competitions several times. For the world championship, the infrastructure around the ski jumping hills was extensively rebuilt and modernized. A multi-purpose building costing five million euros was erected in the run-out area, the grandstands were expanded and a powerful floodlight system was installed. The jumps were equipped with mats for summer training, but the hill profiles were not changed. The large hill had a hill size of 134 meters and a construction point of 120 meters for the World Championships . The official hill record was held by the Finn Janne Ahonen with 139.0 meters, set up at the World Cup in 2004, the unofficial record was held by the Czech Roman Koudelka with 143.0 meters, set up at the Czech Championships in 2008. The normal hill had a hill size of 100 meters and a calculation point of 90 meters. There was no official hill record before the World Championships on the normal hill, as the last World Cup competition was held there in 1994 and thus before the introduction of the regulation of the official hill records. The unofficial hill record was held before the World Championships by the Austrian Thomas Egger Riedmüller, set up at the 2009 Alpine Cup . During the World Cup, the Finn Harri Olli set an official hill record with 104.5 meters. The jump of his compatriot Anssi Koivuranta to 106.5 meters in the mass start competition of the Nordic combined athletes was only rated as an unofficial record, as it was held in an interrupted, non-rated round. Ulrike Gräßler and Nata De Leeuw held the women's record on the hill together with 103.5 meters, set up at the World Cup test competitions in October 2008.
In addition, the Tipsport Arena , a multifunctional arena, was used for the opening ceremony. It also served as the organizing committee's office and press center during the World Cup.
The market square in the center of Liberec was used as the Medal Plaza . While the winners were only honored at a flowers ceremony after the event , the actual award ceremony took place there every evening, in conjunction with concerts and fireworks .
Successful nations and participants
At the top of the medal table was Norway , with five World Cup victories, as it had for several years . Behind them came the United States with four World Cup titles , which for the first time presented itself so strongly at the Nordic World Ski Championships. V. a. Her athletes were successful in Nordic combined. Finland achieved three gold medals behind.
The Norwegian cross-country skier Petter Northug was in very good shape at this World Cup, in contrast to the last World Cup . He won two individual titles and also won relay gold with his team. Northug's compatriot Ola Vigen Hattestad was the outstanding sprinter. He won both the individual and the team sprint title. The cross-country skier Aino-Kaisa Saarinen from Finland won three golds and one bronze. The Pole Justyna Kowalczyk was in cross country twice at the front and also won bronze again. In the Nordic Combined, the American Todd Lodwick became two-time world champion. The team from Austria was very strong among the ski jumpers . Wolfgang Loitzl won one single gold and the world championship title with his team.

This was the last mass start event in history. In the World Cup, it was held for the last time on January 10, 2009 in Val di Fiemme , with Björn Kircheisen winning.
Claims about double gold winner Todd Lodwick that he had not trained for two years have been heavily challenged.
