Madoka Natsumi ( Japanese 夏 見 円 , Natsumi Madoka ; born July 2, 1978 in Abashiri ) is a former Japanese cross-country skier who specializes in sprint competitions. On February 27, 2008 she took third place in the sprint competition in Stockholm and thus achieved the first podium for Japan in the cross-country skiing world cup .

life and career

Natsumi started cross-country skiing at the age of seven and started the cross-country skiing world cup for the first time in 1997. After she was only able to achieve placings far outside the World Cup points at the beginning of her career, she specialized in sprint competitions from the 2001/02 season. So she managed to achieve World Cup points for the first time this season. In Cogne , Italy , she took 24th place over the 5 kilometers in the classic technique. Two weeks later, she also achieved eleventh place in the sprint in the classic technique in Asiago . At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , she confirmed this result with a twelfth place in the freestyle sprint. At the end of the season, she achieved her first top ten finish with tenth place in the sprint in Oslo, Norway .

In the years that followed, Natsumi also managed to achieve World Cup points in sprint competitions several times. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf , however, she clearly missed the finals as 31st in the sprint qualification. In the 2005/06 season she finished eighth in the team sprint in Canmore, Canada with Nobuko Fukuda . The two women were able to repeat this placement at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Pragelato . In the sprint competition, which was held in the free technique , Natsumi was 17th. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2007 in Sapporo , Natsumi reached the A-final in the sprint in the classic technique and achieved her best result in an international competition with fifth place. In the 2007/08 season , Natsumi achieved several top ten placements in sprint competitions. Her best results at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec were 27th place in the sprint and fourth place together with Masako Ishida in the team sprint. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , she finished 30th in the 30 km mass start race, 27th place in the sprint and eighth place in the relay. At the Winter Asian Games 2011 she won silver with the relay and over 5 km classic and gold in the sprint. Her best results at the following Nordic World Ski Championships in 2011 in Oslo were tenth place with the relay and eighth place in the team sprint. After the 2011/12 season, in which she competed in the Far East Cup, she ended her career.
