Abashiri ( Japanese 網 走 市 , - shi ) is a city and the administrative seat of the sub-prefecture Okhotsk on the northeast coast of the island of Hokkaidō .

Abashiri is best known for its prison for political prisoners from the Meiji period . Today there is only a museum on the site, the old prison has been replaced by a new high-security wing.

geography

Abashiri is located on the Sea of ​​Okhotsk in the east of the Okhotsk sub-prefecture . It is located about 50 km east of Kitami . Immediately southwest of the city lies the 33 km 2 large Abashiri Lake (Abashiri-Ko in Japanese).

Because of its location, Abashiri has a very cool monsoon climate , with sometimes meter-high snow falling in winter.

The city was founded in March 1872 .

The Abashiri station is the terminus of Sekihoku Main Line and the Senmō Main Line of JR Hokkaido ; Trains run to Asahikawa and Kushiro . The city can be reached via national roads 39, 238, 244 and 334.
