Rausu ( Japanese 羅 臼 町 , - chō ) is a city in Japan . It is located in the district of Menashi in the sub-prefecture Nemuro in the Japanese prefecture of Hokkaido .

geography

Rausu is located on the southern half of the Shiretoko Peninsula . Kunashir , one of the four Kuril Islands disputed between Japan and Russia , can be seen from the city.

history

In 1901 the village of Uebetsu ( 植 別 村 , -mura ) was separated from the community of Shibetsu . In 1923 he was appointed second class community. 1930 Uembetsu is renamed Rausu. In 1961 he was appointed chō .

The word Rausu comes from the Ainu language from the word ra-us-i ( ラ ウ ㇱ イ ) which probably means “(lower) place with entrails ” and either refers to the fact that salmon or trout spawned here or that game was shot here .
