climate
Due to its location, Sarufutsu has a very cool monsoon climate , with snow falling several meters high in winter.
history
Many Korean prisoners of war were used as labor to build an air field in Asajino during World War II. Around 80 Korean prisoners of war died of malnutrition or exhaustion during the construction. The airfield was never completed and not much of it can be seen today. Attempts were made to erect a memorial to commemorate the prisoners who died there. However, construction had to be abandoned after Japanese nationalists flooded the local government with phone calls and threatened the village with a boycott of the scallop industry .
economy
The main industry today is fishing . Sarufutsu is known, among other things, for its large and particularly excellent mussels. A relatively large part of the village is used for dairy farming. Formerly coal was mined in Koishi .
Sarufutsu has a young tourism industry. For motorcyclists it is a highlight to spend the night in one of the biker camps. The tourist center is a few kilometers south of Hamaonishibetsu.
