Rishirifuji ( Japanese 利 尻 富士 町 , - chō ) is a small town in the district of Rishiri in the Sōya sub-prefecture of Hokkaidō on an island in the Sea of Japan .
etymology
The name Rishirifuji comes from the Rishiri volcano , which is also compared with Mount Fuji and is therefore called Rishiri-Fuji. Rishiri comes from Ainu riishiri , which means "island of the high mountain".
geography
Rishirifuji is geographically located on the eastern part of the island of the same name in the Sea of Japan and politically in the district of Rishiri which extends exclusively over the entire island. The western part of the island belongs politically to the neighboring town of Rishiri . On the border to both is the summit of the 1,721 m high Rishiri volcano . Another mountain is the 444 m high Pon-yama ( ポ ン 山 ). The city center with the port is located at the Peshi Cape ( ペ シ 岬 , Peshi-misaki ).
In summer temperatures do not exceed 30 ° C and in winter around -10 ° C.
history
The district of Rishiri on the island was established in 1869 and divided into 28 large and 4 small districts in 1876. In 1878 the division into the six villages ( mura ) Oshidomari ( 鴛 泊 村 , -mura ), Ishizaki ( 石 崎 村 , -mura ), Oniwaki ( 鬼 脇 村 , -mura ), Senhōshi ( 仙 法 志 村 , -mura ), Kutsugata ( 沓 形村 , -mura ) and Hontomari ( 本 泊 村 , -mura ). With the establishment of a town hall in Oshidomari in 1880, all villages are administered from this. In 1892 Hontomari and Kutsugata became outlying villages or districts of Oshidomari and in 1893 Ishizaki and Senhōshi became outlying villages of Oniwaki. In 1899, Kutsugata from Oshidomari and in 1900 Senhōshi from Oniwaki were spun off, and a town hall was set up in each case, making both independent communities from which today's city of Rishiri was later formed. In 1902 Ishizaki is incorporated into Oniwake and Oniwake and Oshidomari are appointed 2nd class parishes. In 1956 Oniwake and Oshidomari are united to form the village of Higashirishiri ( 東 利 尻 - , -mura , dt. "East Rishiri") and three years later they are appointed chō . In 1990 the community changed its name to Rishirifuji.

economy
The city's two main industries are fishing and tourism. Originally there were rich herring stocks around the island. Nowadays, however, Rishiri is known for kombu and sea urchins . Agriculture - mainly potatoes and other dry crops - is only practiced on a private scale. Tourism has its origins in the establishment of the then Rishiri-Rebun Quasi-National Park in 1965 (from 1974 Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park), which is still the mainspring today.
