Utashinai ( Japanese 歌 志 内 市 , - shi ) is a city in the Sorachi sub-prefecture on the island of Hokkaidō ( Japan ).

Utashinai is southwest of Asahikawa and northeast of Sapporo .
At the beginning of the 20th century, Utashinai had a population of 7,000 and was known as the coal city. This led to a rapid increase in population, with 10,000 people living in the city during the Meiji- 40s (1907-1916) and 20,000 people during the early Taishō period , which continued even after World War II as of 1948 Peak value of 46,000 inhabitants was reached. From the 1960s onwards, the coal industry was in decline and the population dropped to 10,000 by 1981 and to 5,000 after the Sorachi coal mine closed in March 1995, with a continuing trend.
