Tomakomai ( Japanese 苫 小 牧 市 , - shi ) is the largest port city in the Iburi sub-prefecture on the island of Hokkaidō ( Japan ).
history
In the early 19th century Tomakomai was an important traffic and economic center for the region. There has been a paper and chemical industry since 1910. He was appointed Shi on April 1, 1948. The large port facilities, which were completed in 1963, were the basis for heavy industry, and in 1976 they were expanded again. The Tomatō-Atsuma power plant on the city limits has been in operation since 1980 .
On March 11, 2011, after the Tōhoku earthquake, a 2.1 m high tsunami was reported in the western port of Tomakomai and a 2.5 m high tsunami in the eastern port .

Tomakomai is located south of Sapporo on the Pacific Ocean .
traffic
The Tomakomai Station is an important railway junction at the Muroran Main Line of Iwamizawa on Muroran after Oshamambe . Here the Hidaka main line branches off to Samani , in the neighboring Numanohata station the Chitose line to Sapporo station .
Tomakomai can be reached via the Doo and Hidaka highways, as well as national roads 36, 234, 235, 276 and 453.
