history
The mining and railway company Hokkaidō Tankō Tetsudō had opened the first section of the Muroran main line between Iwamizawa and Higashi-Muroran in 1892, but the trains went through here for the time being. This changed on February 1, 1898 with the commissioning of Numanohata station. After the nationalization on October 1, 1906, the Railway Office (later the Railway Ministry ) was responsible.
In 1920 the Tomakomai – Numanohata – Toasa section of the Muroran main line was expanded to two tracks. On July 24, 1922, the railway company opened Hokkaido tetsudō the Tomiuchi line after Hidakachō that mainly the transport of chromium , coal and wood used. The Ministry of Railways nationalized the Hokkaidō Tetsudō 21 years later and closed the section Numanohata – Toyoshiro on November 1, 1943, as it ran largely parallel to the Hidaka main line .
On August 21, 1926, the Chitose Line , which ran directly from Numanohata to Sapporo , opened, eliminating the long detour via Iwamizawa. In 1969 the Japanese State Railways also expanded the Chitose line to two tracks. After cargo handling had been stopped on May 15, 1980, the Chitose Line and the subsequent section Numanohata – Higashi- Muroran – Muroran Muroran Main Line were electrified on October 1 of the same year . For cost reasons, the state railway also gave up baggage check on February 1, 1984. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 .
