description
This marsh plant is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of growth of up to 100 cm. The plants have slender, thin, green leaves with a raised midrib. A side branch with 3 to 4 flowers is often formed from the stem.
It is occasionally cultivated as an ornamental plant in Central Europe. However, it places high demands on the gardener, as it is sensitive to lime and requires a wet location in May to June and a dry location in autumn and winter.
The wild form blooms red-purple, of the varieties bred from this plant in the meantime, there are white, pink-red, blue and purple hues.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24, 40 or 80.
