Location of Akkeshis in Hokkaidō Prefecture | ||
Akkeshi ( Japanese 厚 岸 町 ; Akkeshi-chō ) is a district city in the district of the same name in the Kushiro sub-prefecture of Hokkaidō in Japan .
location and size
Akkeshi is located on the east coast of the Japanese main island Hokkaidō on the Akkeshi lagoon. The city covers an area of 734.82 km² and in 2016 had 9,890 inhabitants.
history
The Ainu , who had lived in the area of the Akkeshi lagoon for centuries before the Japanese colonized the area at the beginning of the 19th century, called the place Atkeusi . The name of the city is based on this designation. The current city of Akkeshi was formed in 1900 by amalgamating four cities and seven villages. In 1917, the Akkeshi station was built on the railway line from Kushiro to Nemuro. The southern part of the former village of Ota was incorporated in 1955.
economy
Despite its northern location, the city's port is ice-free even in winter. Major industries in Akkeshi are oyster farming and herring fishing.
Attractions
The northern district of Shinryū , which developed around the station and where most of the shops and offices are located, is separated from Honchō , the southern and older district, by the Akkeshi lagoon . Both parts of the city are connected by a 456 m long bridge that offers a beautiful view of the city and the lagoon. In the Shinryū district, the city's modern town hall is well worth seeing.
The Kokutai is a Buddhist temple founded in 1802 by the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism . It is located in the Honchō district and is one of the oldest and most important temples on Hokkaidō. Missionary activities for the conversion of the Ainu began here in 1804.
At the 32 km² large and up to 11 m deep Akkeshi lagoon, a 381 hectare nature reserve has been created, where you can observe the rare Red-crowned crane . The river Bekambeushi , whose name comes from the Ainu language , flows into the lagoon, which does not freeze over even in winter .
Transport links
Akkeshi is located about 50 km east of Kushiro on the east coast of Hokkaidō on the Nemuro main line . The Akkeshi train station in the Shinryu district can be reached several times a day by train from Kushiro and Nemuro . The nearest airport is in Kushiro.
