List of train stations in Japan |
The Nemuro Station ( Japanese 根 室 駅 , Nemuro-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . It is located in the sub-prefecture of Nemuro in the area of the city of Nemuro .
description
Nemuro is the eastern end point of the Nemuro main line , which runs from Takikawa via Obihiro and Kushiro and is operated by the JR Hokkaido company. The train station in the city center is oriented from east to west and has three tracks, with only the one on the main platform being used for passenger traffic. The station building is on the northern edge of the facility. The line does not end in the actual train station, but continues about 200 meters further west to a stubby siding . For this reason, Nemuro is not operationally a terminus, but a through station. To the east of the station there are two depots with two tracks each.
Regional trains run from Nemuro to Kushiro every two to three hours , plus the Nosappu and Hanasaki express trains once a day . The station forecourt is the location of the central bus terminal of the company Nemuro Kōtsū , which operates several city and regional lines as well as long-distance buses to Kushiro and Sapporo .
history
The Ministry of Railways opened the section between Nishi-Wada and Nemuro on August 5, 1921, completing the construction of the Nemuro main line. At that time the station was equipped with a water crane , a locomotive shed and a turntable . On August 12, 1934, a 2.6 km long branch line to the port of Nemuro was opened, which was used for freight traffic. Since there was no direct connection, the freight trains had to turn heads at Nemuro station. The port railway was shut down on October 1st, 1964.
For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways stopped handling goods on February 1, 1984, and checked baggage on November 1, 1986. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 .
