Kushiro is a through station and former separation station on the Nemuro main line . This leads from Takikawa via Obihiro to Nemuro and is operated by the company JR Hokkaido . Kushiro is the terminus of six daily express trains called Super Ōzora , which run via Obihiro to Sapporo . Regional trains run every one to two hours via Obihiro to Shintoku and seven times a day to Nemuro. In addition, Kushiro is the terminus of all trains that run on the Senmō main line , which branches off in the neighboring Higashi-Kushiro station, to Abashiri (usually five times a day).
Immediately to the east of the station forecourt is a bus station with 15 stops. It was opened in 1972 and is served by the lines of the companies Kushiro Bus and Akan Bus .

The station is located on the northern edge of the city center and faces west to east. It has five tracks on the main platform and on two covered central platforms . An underpass connects the platforms with the station building on the south side of the facility and with the northern parts of the city. The reception building has various shops and restaurants, a Postbank branch and a tourist information center on the ground floor . The remaining three floors contain mainly offices from the Kushiro branch of JR Hokkaido. There was a department store in the basement, but it was closed in May 2004.
Approximately one kilometer west of the station is one of the depots of JR Hokkaido.

history
The state company Hokkaidō Kansetsu Tetsudō began building a railway line to the east of the island in the late 1890s. On the one hand it expanded from Asahikawa and on the other from Kushiro. On July 20, 1901, they opened the first section at the eastern end between Kushiro and Shiranuka . The Kushiro train station was then about 300 meters southwest near the port. The railway office responsible from 1905 (later the Ministry of Railways ) closed the last gap two years later, so that trains could now run as far as Sapporo . During the First World War , construction began on the extension towards Nemuro . The station was not convenient, which is why it was replaced by a new one on the outskirts of the city. This was opened on December 1, 1917, together with the section to Akkeshi . The old terminus from 1901 was closed to passenger traffic, but remained in operation for freight traffic until 1962 under the name Hamakushiro ( 浜 釧 路 ).
On January 17, 1923, the private company Yūbetsu Tetsudō opened a branch line that led from Kushiro to Yūbetsu-tanzan. The Yūbetsu Line was 44 km long and was mainly used to transport coal . Since September 15, 1927, Kushiro has been the terminus of the Senmō main line . The station building was replaced by a new building in 1961 and expanded in 1968. After the bankruptcy of Yūbetsu Tetsudō , the route to Yūbetsu-Tanzan had to be closed on April 16, 1970. For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways stopped checking in luggage on November 1, 1986. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 .
