List of train stations in Japan |
The Shiranuka Station ( Jap. 白糠駅 , Shiranuka-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Hokkaido . It is located in Kushiro Sub-Prefecture, Shiranuka Township area .
description
Shiranuka is a through station and former separation station on the Nemuro main line . This leads from Takikawa via Obihiro and Kushiro to Nemuro and is operated by the JR Hokkaido company. The Super Ōzora express trains stop in Shiranuka and run six times a day from Sapporo to Kushiro and back. In addition, there are regional trains between Shintoku and Kushiro every one to two hours . There is a Kushiro Bus bus stop in front of the train station .
The train station is in the center of the village and faces west to east. It has four tracks, three of which are used for passenger traffic. They are located on the main platform and on a central platform that is connected to the station building on the south side of the facility by a covered overpass . A footbridge leads north from the station forecourt, but is not connected to the central platform.
history
The state company Hokkaidō Kansetsu Tetsudō built a railway line from Asahikawa and Kushiro to develop the eastern part of the island. On July 20, 1901, it put the section between Kushiro and Shiranuka into operation. The station was the terminus for almost two years, until the subsequent section to Ombetsu was opened on March 1, 1903. In 1905, responsibility was transferred to the Railway Authority (later the Ministry of Railways ).
On October 7, 1964, the Japanese State Railways started operating the Shiranuka line to Kami-Charo, which branches off the Nemuro main line (extended to Hokushin in 1972). It was mainly used to transport wood and coal , which were extracted in the region, to the port of Kushiro. After a few years, the line was extremely unprofitable and was therefore shut down on October 23, 1983 after only 19 years of operation. For cost reasons, the state railway stopped handling goods on September 10, 1982, and checked baggage on March 14, 1985. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 .
