Shosambetsu ( Japanese 初 山 別 村 , - mura ) is a village in the district of Tomamae in the Rumoi sub-prefecture on Hokkaidō .
etymology
The name Shosambetsu comes from Ainu shusampetsu , which means "river with the small swamp".
geography
The three main settlements of Shosambetsu are Toyosaki ( 豊 岬 ) in the north, Shosambetsu ( 初 山 別 ) and Ariake ( 有 明 ) in the south, each on the Sea of Japan . All three are suffering from severe population decline.
The village area is traversed by the river Fūrembetsu ( 風 連 別 川 , -gawa ).
Shosambetsu is the only village parish in the sub-prefecture.
history
The village of Shosambetsu as an independent municipality was created on September 19, 1901 as a spin-off from the village of Haboro . On April 1, 1909, it was named 2nd class community.
Attractions
The Shosambetsu Observatory is located in Toyosaki, Japan's northernmost observatory. This is located on the edge of the Misakidai-kōen green area ( み さ き 台 公園 ), which in turn is located at an exit from the national road 232 and on which there is a campsite, a rest stop and a rest area.
There is also the 11 ° C Shosambetsu Onsen in the village .
traffic
Shosambetsu is connected to the national road 232 to Teshio and Rumoi . Prefecture streets that cross the town limits are prefecture streets 448, 612 and 708.
All previous train connections to Shosambetsu have been discontinued. The 1987 completely closed Haboro line of the state JNR to Rumoi and Horonobe stopped at the stations Teshio-Ariake, Teshio-Sakae, Shosambetsu, Toyosaki, Teshio-Ōsawa and Kyōsei. The Haboro line was originally used to transport coal.
economy
The main industry is fishing, especially puffer fish ( fugu ) and octopus ( tako ). Agriculture and dairy farming have been promoted since 2006.
education
Shosambetsu is home to the Ariake and Shosambetsu Primary Schools and the Shosambetsu Middle School. In the Toyosaki district there is a joint elementary and middle school.
