Tomari ( Japanese 泊 村 , - mura ) is a village in the Japanese district of Furuu in the Shiribeshi sub-prefecture on Hokkaidō .
etymology
The name Tomari comes from the Ainu . In the Ainu time, there was a place at the mouth of the river called moyre-tomari , which means “slow anchorage” and refers to the weak tides at this point. Another interpretation is the origin of Ainu hemoy-tomari , which means "Bay of the incoming salmon".
geography
Tomari is on the Shakotan Peninsula .
In Tomari there are only a few flat areas, mainly mountain forests. The highest mountain is the Kumaoi ( 熊 追 山 , -yama ) with 805.4 m, which is located on the city limits to Furubira .
In the north of the city is the island of Benten -jima ( 弁 天 島 ) , which is connected to the mainland .
history
In 1909 the villages of Tomari, Sakazuki ( 盃 村 , -mura ), Okishinai ( 興 志 内 村 , -mura ), Kayanuma ( 茅 沼 村 , -mura ), Horikappu ( 堀 株 村 , -mura ) merged to form the 2nd class community Tomari . In 1923 it was classified as a first class municipality. In the same year, a district was spun off as the newly founded village of Hattari , which is now a district of Kyōwa in Iwanai County .
In 1856 coal was discovered in Tomari and with the help of British engineers the Kayanuma coal mine ( 茅 沼 炭 鉱 , Kayanuma tankō ) opened in 1867, which was the oldest Hokkaidōs. Today only around 2000 people live in Tomari, at the height of coal mining, 10,000 lived on it. The mine closed in 1964 and the remainder in 1969.
On July 22, 1989, the first reactor block of the Tomari nuclear power plant and thus the first Hokkaidō nuclear power plant went into operation. The second reactor block followed on April 12, 1991, and the third and most powerful block on December 10, 2009.
For these reasons, the community's nickname is also the “home village of energy” ( エ ネ ル ギ ー の ふ る さ と , enerugī no furusato ).
Attractions
The origin of the Sakazuki Onsen Village ( 盃 温泉 郷 , Sakazuki onsenkyō ) goes back to 1905 when it was still a public bath. In 1975 it was named a National Onsen Spa ( 国民 保養 温泉 地 , kokumin hoyō onsenchi ) by the Japanese Environmental Protection Agency . It is part of the Niseko Shakotan Otaru Coastal Quasi National Park , along with other features of the city . Since the water contains minerals containing sodium sulphate , the source is sought out for the relief of nerve and muscle pain.
Benten-jima Island is 200 meters from the hot springs.
traffic
Tomari is connected to the national road 229 to Otaru or Esashi , as well as to the prefecture road 342.
economy
The main employer is the Tomari nuclear power plant, which supplies 30% of Hokkaidō's energy. Due to its taxes Tomari is the only municipality in Hokkaidō that is not entitled to subsidies from the prefecture.
Other industries are fishing and tourism.
Town twinning
Since February 1998 Ikata has been the sister city of Tomaris in the Japanese prefecture of Ehime .
