Niseko ( Jap. ニセコ町 , - chō ) is a town in the district of Abuta , sub-prefecture Shiribeshi , prefecture Hokkaido in Japan .

geography

It is 35 km from the Sea of Japan and around 100 km west of Sapporo and is surrounded by several ski areas. The annual average temperature is 7.4 ° C, which together with an annual average precipitation of 131.1 mm leads to very snow-sure conditions (snow depth up to 200 cm).

Niseko is also the name of a volcano in the north of the Niseko-chō area. The Yōtei is another volcano in the east of Niseko.

history

In 1895 the area was settled for the first time and in 1897 as Karifuto ( 狩 太 ) part of the Mura Makkari (today: Rusutsu ). In 1901 she became independent from Makkari as Mura Karifuto ( 狩 太 村 , -mura ) and in 1906 she became 2nd class municipality. In 1910 the Nisekoan area from Kutchan and in 1925 some areas from Bembe (today: Toyoura ) are incorporated. In 1950 he was appointed Chō Karifuto ( 狩 太 町 , -chō ) and in 1964 it was renamed Niseko (after Ainu : nisey-ko ).

Due to its location between mountains and the sea, Niseko is exposed to the cold and dry Siberian winds that accumulate moisture over the Sea of ​​Japan. This moisture produces heavy and persistent snowfall in winter.

The ski areas around Niseko have been expanding more strongly since the mid-1990s. Since then, Niseko has also become better known abroad due to its snow-sure conditions. It is increasingly visited by the Chinese.
