Gleimviertel
The Gleimviertel is a residential area in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg in the Pankow district .
location
The area between the S-Bahn route of the Berlin Ringbahn in the north (north of Kopenhagener Strasse ), Schönhauser Allee in the east, Eberswalder Strasse in the south and the district boundary to Gesundbrunnen in the west is called the Gleimviertel . In the west, the quarter closes with the tracks and the embankment of the former Stettiner Bahn , which from 1961 to 1989 represented the border of the Berlin Wall and are now used as Mauerpark . Adjacent residential quarters are the Nordic Quarter around Arnimplatz in the north, the Helmholtzkiez around Helmholtzplatz in the east, the area around Kastanienallee in the south and the Brunnenviertel around Brunnenstrasse in the west. The district is named after the Gleimstraße running from east to west across the area , named after the poet Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim .
particularities
In the south-west of the district, next to the Mauerpark, there is the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark with the Max-Schmeling-Halle . The Colosseum is a large multiplex cinema in the district . In the southeast is the Eberswalder Straße underground station , in the northeast the Schönhauser Allee underground station . Another special feature is the Gleim tunnel . Due to the delimitation by the S-Bahn tracks in the north, the Jahn sports park in the south and the former border in the west, the Gleimviertel had the character of a peninsula with traffic connections during the GDR era.
In the 2010s, the Gleimkiez, like other districts in Prenzlauer Berg, became a focus of gentrification.
