Niseko ( Jap. ニセコ町 , - chō ) is a town in the district of Abuta , sub-prefecture Shiribeshi , prefecture Hokkaido in Japan .
geography
It is 35 km from the Sea of Japan and around 100 km west of Sapporo and is surrounded by several ski areas. The annual average temperature is 7.4 ° C, which together with an annual average precipitation of 131.1 mm leads to very snow-sure conditions (snow depth up to 200 cm).
Niseko is also the name of a volcano in the north of the Niseko-chō area. The Yōtei is another volcano in the east of Niseko.
history
In 1895 the area was settled for the first time and in 1897 as Karifuto ( 狩 太 ) part of the Mura Makkari (today: Rusutsu ). In 1901 she became independent from Makkari as Mura Karifuto ( 狩 太 村 , -mura ) and in 1906 she became 2nd class municipality. In 1910 the Nisekoan area from Kutchan and in 1925 some areas from Bembe (today: Toyoura ) are incorporated. In 1950 he was appointed Chō Karifuto ( 狩 太 町 , -chō ) and in 1964 it was renamed Niseko (after Ainu : nisey-ko ).
tourism
Due to its location between mountains and the sea, Niseko is exposed to the cold and dry Siberian winds that accumulate moisture over the Sea of Japan. This moisture produces heavy and persistent snowfall in winter.
The ski areas around Niseko have been expanding more strongly since the mid-1990s. Since then, Niseko has also become better known abroad due to its snow-sure conditions. It is increasingly visited by the Chinese.
The slopes illuminated at night are a special attraction.
Ski areas are:
- Niseko Grand Hirafu
- Niseko Higashiyama - (1898 m)
- Niseko Annupuri - (1309 m)
