Atsuma ( Japanese 厚 真 町 , - chō ) is a small town on the island of Hokkaidō in northern Japan . It has about 4600 inhabitants and belongs to the Yūfutsu-gun County in Iburi Sub-Prefecture .

On September 6, 2018, the Hokkaidō earthquake shook the city of Atsuma, which was located in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter of the earthquake in Atsuma's neighboring community of Mukawa (む か わ 町) and was hit hardest by the earthquake. In the district of Shikanuma (鹿 沼) the quake reached the maximum seismic intensity of 7 on the JMA scale . The quake triggered numerous landslides in the city of Atsuma , which buried several houses under them, exposed slopes previously covered by vegetation and blocked the main road and other roads. Experts blamed the high occurrence of loose volcanic soil on Hokkaidō for the island's particular susceptibility to landslides. The day before the earthquake, typhoon 21 in 2018 ("Jebi") - considered the strongest typhoon in Japan for 25 years and claiming 14 lives across Japan - hit Hokkaidō, with heavy rains hitting the soil on the hills and mountains of Hokkaidō had loosened. 192 of the 394 houses completely destroyed in the earthquake and 278 of the 1,016 partially destroyed houses were in Atsuma. In the Tomatō-Atsuma thermal power station (Wärme 東 厚 真 火力 発 電 所) there was a fire on the morning of September 6th.

Of the total of 41 fatalities from the earthquake, 36 were in Atsuma. 61 Atsuma residents were slightly injured.

The areas of operation for the rescue workers in Atsuma included the areas chiku (地区) Yoshino (吉野), Tomisato (富 里), Horonai (幌 内), Takaoka (高丘) and Horosato (幌 里). By the night of September 8, 2018, 16 deaths were confirmed from the 34 residents of the district of Yoshino alone, while another resident had suffered cardiac arrest and two more were still missing. For days after the earthquake, most of Atsuma's residents were being supplied and fed in emergency shelters, while the town's water and electricity supply had not yet been fully restored.
