The Tomato-Atsuma power plant is a coal-fired power plant in the Japanese city of Atsuma . With an installed capacity of 1,650 megawatts , it covers half of the electricity needs of the island of Hokkaidō .
history
The first unit of the power plant went into operation in October 1980, and further units were put into operation by 2002.
During the Hokkaidō earthquake on September 6, 2018, all three active power plant units were damaged and the power plant was shut down. As a result, the power fell on all of Hokkaidō. After repairs and the replacement of individual components, all power plant units were able to operate normally again from October 10, 2018.
Power plant units
The power plant has four blocks. Operation of block three, which was operated by means of experimental fluidized bed combustion (Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustion or PFBC) , was discontinued in 2005.
