Location of Erimos in the prefecture

Erimo ( Japanese え り も 町 , - chō ) is a Japanese city in the south of the island of Hokkaidō in the district of Horoizumi in the sub-prefecture of Hidaka .

Erimo is known for its strong winds, kombu algae and Cape Erimo .

geography

Erimo is located at the southeastern tip of Hokkaidō and at the end of it the Cape Erimo ( 襟 裳 岬 ). A large part of the municipality belongs to the Hidaka Mountains , which merge directly into the sea, especially in the eastern part. The highest point is the Toyoni-dake ( 豊 似 岳 ) with 1104.6 m. Settlement is concentrated on a larger coastal strip in the west with many estuaries extending to the cape and a larger one in the east.

Due to its location, there are strong winds in Erimo; at the Cape even at least 10 m / s on 290 days a year.

The community consists of ten districts ( aza ). In the west on the border with the neighboring municipality of Samani in a small coastal plain at the mouth of the Nikanpetsu-kawa ( ニ カ ン ベ ツ 川 ), which also forms the municipality boundary, is the district of Chikaura ( 近 浦 ). This is followed by a longer coastal strip with the district Fuemai ( 笛 舞 ), then a contiguous small-town settlement area with Yamato ( 大 和 ), downtown Honchō ( 本 町 ) flowed through by Horoizumi-kawa ( 幌 泉 川 ) and then Shinhama ( 新 浜 ). Further at the mouth of Poroppu-kawa ( コ ロ ッ プ 川 ) of the larger class 2 river Utabetsu-kawa ( 歌 別 川 ) and its wide river valley is the district of Utabetsu ( 歌 別 ). Tōyō ( 東洋 ) follows even further south . Erimomisaki ( え り も 岬 ) is located on the east side of the headland to the cape . The following coastal strip belongs to the district Shoya ( 庶 野 ). The coast thereafter is dominated by mountains with the exception of the mouth of the Saruru-gawa ( 猿 留 川 ) in the northeast in which the hamlet of Meguro ( 目 黒 ) is located. The other neighboring municipality Hiroo joins in the north.

history

In 1669, a trading post appears in the chronicles for the area. This was later an important transshipment point for Kombu . The first local administration was set up in 1880. In 1906, as part of a community reorganization , it was appointed a village community called Horoizumi ( 幌 泉村 , - mura ) and the only community in the district. On January 1, 1959, it was upgraded to a small town ( chō ) and on October 1, 1970, it was renamed Erimo. This name is derived from the Ainu word enrum for "cape".

traffic

The most important trunk road is the national road 336 to Urakawa or Kushiro . The section into the neighboring Hiroo is called "Gold Road" ( 黄金 道路 , Ōgon-dōro ) because the route had to be cut into the rock and the construction work was as costly as if the entire road had been covered with gold.

education

There are five primary schools in Erimo: Fuemai, Erimo, Tōyō, Erimomisaki and Shoya. In addition, the Erimo elementary school and the Erimo secondary school and the Erimo high school are located in the Shinhama district. Until March 31, 2006 there was another elementary and middle school in Meguro.

economy

The main source of income for the population is fishing , especially kombu , ketal salmon and sea urchins . In the center of town there is a museum dedicated to fishing and the kombu.

In Erimo there are two wind turbines built in 1996, each with an output of 400 kW. In addition, a further 400 kW system was installed at the Erimo primary school in 2000 for self-consumption.

Attractions

The most famous sight is the windy Cape Erimo with its 60 m high cliffs, which became known nationwide for the Enka song of the same name by Shin'ichi Mori . There is also a lighthouse built in 1889. There is also a museum dedicated to the wind, the "House of the Wind" ( 風 の 館 , Kaze no Yakata ), where you can experience winds with a force of 25 m / s.
