The Hidaka Mountains ( Japanese 日 高 山脈 , Hidaka-sanmyaku ) is a mountain range in southwestern Hokkaidō in Japan . It extends 150 km south from Karikachi Pass in central Hokkaidō until it merges into the sea at Cape Erimo . The mountain range forms the border between the sub-prefectures of Hidaka and Tokachi .

It is a fold of mountains with an altitude of 1500 to 2000 m. There are over 20 cirques in this mountain range. The highest peak is the Poroshiri with 2053 m.

The mountain range separates the sub-prefectures of Hidaka and Tokachi. The Hidaka-Sanmyaku-Erimo-Quasi-National Park ( 日 高 山脈 襟 裳 国 定 公園 , Hidaka-sanmyaku Erimo kokudeikōen ) extends over most of the mountain range . Since the mountains are so far north, the alpine climate zone begins at a low altitude. Mount Apoi is known among botanists for its endemic alpine plant species.

The Hidaka Mountains are one of the last retreats for the Hokkaidō bear and sika deer in Japan.
