The BMW R 1150 RS is a sporty touring motorcycle from Bayerische Motorenwerke with the typical 2-cylinder boxer engine. The front and rear suspension can be individually adjusted and adapted to the needs of the driver, depending on whether sporty or comfortable driving is preferred. Seat height, handlebar position, windshield and handbrake lever can also be adjusted. The sports tourer has several mechanically similar sister models with largely identical engines and different chassis designs and equipment. Parallel models are the Tourer R 1150 RT and the Enduro R 1150 GS .
General
The R 1150 RS replaced the R 1100 RS with the 2001 model year . Except for new paintwork variants, hardly any changes were made to the visual appearance. The engine output was increased slightly from 66 to 70 kW (90 to 95 PS); the displacement also experienced a marginal increase from 1085 cm³ to 1130 cm³.
The RS adopts the new brake technology from the BMW R 1150 RT . The previously installed ABS II was replaced by the integral ABS, which was available in two versions, as a partial and a fully integral ABS. The RS came from the factory with the semi-integral version in which both wheels are braked with the front brake, but only the rear wheel with the foot brake.
Technical specifications
engine
The air and oil-cooled boxer engine is installed lengthways and generates a nominal output of 70 kW (95 hp). Each cylinder of the four-stroke engine has two intake and two exhaust valves as well as an overhead, chain-driven camshaft and rocker arm . The models from 2002 onwards have double ignition with two spark plugs per cylinder to improve running behavior and exhaust emissions. The two-cylinder engine has electronic intake manifold injection , digital engine control , a regulated three-way catalytic converter , wet sump pressure lubrication, transistor ignition , a 12 volt starter battery with a capacity of 19 Ah and an alternator with 700 watts of power.
Power transmission
The primary drive takes place via gear wheels, the secondary drive via a double cardan shaft ( Paralever - Cardan ). The single-disc dry clutch is operated hydraulically. The transmission has six gears, the last gear being designed as overdrive .
landing gear
The motor-gear unit is designed to be load-bearing and supports the front wheel guidance ( Telelever ). The front frame is made of cast aluminum, the rear frame of steel; the front Telelever fork has a 35 mm standpipe diameter and 120 mm suspension travel, the rear aluminum single- sided swing arm with Paralever torque support has a central spring strut and 135 mm suspension travel. The spring preload is hydraulically adjustable, the rebound stage is continuously adjustable. The motorcycle has cast wheels made of light alloy, the rim size is 3.50 × 17 at the front and 5.00 × 17 at the rear. Two four-piston fixed-caliper disc brakes with a diameter of 320 mm decelerate on the front wheel , while a two-piston floating caliper brake with a diameter of 276 mm acts at the rear .
