Previous model BMW F 800 GS

The BMW F 850 GS is a mid-range all-round enduro motorcycle from the BMW brand . The model was presented in 2018 as the successor to the BMW F 800 GS .

history

The BMW F 850 GS and its sister model BMW F 750 GS are the youngest representatives of the F-GS series from BMW. The F series began in 1993 with the BMW F 650, produced jointly with Aprilia , with a single-cylinder four-stroke engine from Rotax with a displacement of 652 cc. This was followed between 2000 and 2007 by the BMW F 650 GS with the same Rotax engine, but with injection instead of carburettor. Between 2008 and 2012 the F 650 GS was equipped with the Rotax parallel twin two-cylinder with 798 cm³ displacement, which has been in a similar form since 2006 in the BMW F 800 S and ST, and from 2008 also in the enduro BMW F 800 GS has been used. In 2012 it was followed by the reduced-power sister model, the BMW F 700 GS, with the same parallel twin engine. The two models F 850 GS and F 750 GS with the same engine and very similar in other details have been produced since 2018.

As usual with BMW, the prefix “F” stands for “Fun” or “Funduro” and the suffix GS for terrain and road.

engine

The F has a water-cooled two-cylinder GS 850 four-stroke engine with four over drag lever actuated valves per cylinder, two overhead camshafts and dry sump lubrication . The cylinder bore of 84 mm and the piston stroke of 77 mm result in a displacement of 853 cm³. The maximum speed is 9000 min −1 . With a regulated 3-way catalytic converter, the engine complies with the Euro 4 emissions standard .

The previous models F 800 GS and F 700 GS were equipped with a 798 cm³ two-cylinder in-line twin engine with 360 ° ignition offset, i.e. pistons running in the same direction. In the models F 850 GS and F 750 GS, which have been produced since 2018, it is now an 853 cm³ two-cylinder in-line twin with a 90 degree crank pin offset and an ignition offset of 270 and 450 degrees. This engine has balance shafts . Due to this design and firing order, the engine has a similar behavior to a V2 engine .

The less powerful sister model, the F 750 GS, is limited to an output of 57 kW (77 hp) due to a modified engine control, otherwise the engines and transmissions are the same for both models. The engine was designed by BMW, but is manufactured by BMW's cooperation partner Loncin in China.

The motorcycle can also be delivered with an output reduced to 35 kW (48 HP) for the A2 motorcycle license.

Constructive features

Instead of a tubular space frame as in the previous model, the F 850 GS has a bridge frame with steel profiles in a shell construction, which offers greater torsional rigidity. The tank is also not installed under the seat bench, but above the engine.

Differences between F 750 GS and F 850 GS

The engine, gearbox, frame and many other parts of the two sister machines are completely the same, the spare part numbers are often identical. The main differences are that the F 750 GS is designed a little more for the road, the F 850 GS more for the terrain. The main differences are:

engine

The engines of both machines are the same. The lower output of the F 750 GS compared to the F 850 GS is only achieved through the modified engine control.

F 750 GS F 850 GS
power 57 kW / 77 hp at 7500 min -1 70 kW / 95 hp at 8250 min -1
Torque 83 Nm at 6000 min -1 92 Nm at 6250 min -1
Top speed 190 km / h > 200 km / h

The power and torque diagrams of both machines show that the F 850 GS only at high speeds from about 6000 min -1 has a higher torque and more power.

landing gear

F 750 GS F 850 GS
Front wheel guide Telescopic fork Ø 41 mm Upside-down fork Ø 43 mm
Suspension travel front / rear 151/177 mm 204/219 mm
Front wheel 2.50 x 19 " 2.15 x 21 "

The rear wheel is the same on both machines with 4.25 x 17 ".

Seat height

F 750 GS F 850 GS
Standard seat height 815 mm 860 mm
Minimum possible seat height (with lowering) 770 mm 815 mm
Maximum possible seat height (with comfort bench) 830 mm 875 mm

The greater seat height of the F 850 GS is primarily the result of the 21 "larger front wheel and the greater spring travel at the front and rear. The seating position with the feet on the footrests is almost the same due to the identical frames of both machines.

Reviews

“You may not see it at first glance in the new BMW F 850 GS, but it is actually a completely new design. Both the steel chassis and the drive were changed, the engine was enlarged to 853 cubic meters and the 90 degree crank pin offset made it even more powerful. This means that the new F 850 GS is more confident than excited and impresses both on and off the road. The very special thing about the BMW is the ability to tailor it to your personal needs thanks to the extensive range of accessories - there is actually no feature currently available that you cannot get on your F 850 GS. However, that also drives up the price. "

- 1000ps.de, BMW F 850 GS Test 2018 , March 15, 2018

“If you are looking for an easy-to-drive, pretty travel enduro, you will now find another alternative here. The strengths of the F 850 GS lie in its comfort, simplicity, low consumption and the extremely wide range of extras and accessories. The wind protection is one of the weaknesses ... "

- Peter Schönlaub : motorrad-magazin.at, BMW F 850 GS in the travel test , June 10, 2018

“The 850 has grown up a lot and moved closer to its boxer sister. The gain in comfort and sovereignty is not for free, when maneuvering and slow off-road passages, the F 850 GS is noticeably more sluggish than its 30 kilo lighter predecessor.

- Erik Förster : motorrad.net, better than ever? BMW F 850 GS in the test , March 12, 2019

“The Baby GS has moved significantly closer to its big sister. The more sophisticated engine and the high-quality chassis are clearly superior to the 800. But the spirit of adventure was lost in the change. "

- Peter Mayer : Motorrad (magazine) , BMW F 800 GS and BMW F 850 GS in the test , June 19, 2018
