The BMW HP2 Megamoto is a partially faired motorcycle from the German vehicle manufacturer BMW . The Supermoto was presented in October 2006 together with the sister model BMW G 650 Xmoto at the Intermot in Cologne and is technically based largely on the BMW HP2 Enduro , the production of which it replaced immediately in August 2006. The Megamoto was manufactured in the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau until November 2008 and was removed from the range without a successor.
Vehicle designation
The model designation HP2 stands for High Performance ( German high-performance ), Mega Moto is a neologism of marketing departments of BMW and KTM for powerful Supermotos. The series has the factory code K25H and the vehicle identification number (VIN) is 0310.
Technical specifications
Compared to the HP2 Enduro, the Megamoto has a lowered chassis with shorter suspension travel and smaller 17 "rims with road tires, which results in a lower seat height. A double disc brake system on the front wheel decelerates, the cockpit was supplemented by a tachometer. The compression ratio was 11: 0 increased to 12: 1, which increased the rated power by 6 kW (8 hp).
drive
The HP2 is driven by an air and oil-cooled boxer engine. The four-stroke engine has two cylinders and one camshaft and four valves per cylinder. The two cylinders have a Ø 101 mm bore and the pistons have a stroke of 73 mm. To reduce weight, the exposed valve covers are made of an aluminum alloy with a proportion of magnesium .
The single-plate dry clutch is operated hydraulically. The transmission has six gears. In the secondary drive , a cardan shaft with two joints transfers the torque from the gearbox output to the rear axle. The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 215 km / h.
landing gear
The Megamoto has a chassis with a lattice frame made of steel tubes . The frame layout is based on that of the rally motorcycle BMW R 900RR (1999–2001). In contrast to the GS, the motor is not a load-bearing element. Instead of a heavy Telelever, the front wheel is guided by a massive upside-down fork from Marzocchi with a 45 millimeter tube diameter. The steering head angle is 61.4 degrees, the caster 95 mm. The rear forged single- sided swing arm made of aluminum with Paralever torque support has a central suspension strut from Öhlins with 160 mm travel.
The brake system of Brembo comes from the sports boxer 1200 S BMW R . A floating double disc brake with a diameter of 320 mm and a 4-piston fixed calliper slows the front wheel. A disc brake with a diameter of 265 mm and a double-piston floating caliper works on the rear wheel. An anti-lock braking system was available as an option from February 2008. The mean deceleration is 9.3 m / s². The permissible total weight is 380 kg, the maximum load is 178 kg.
The Megamoto was delivered as standard with indigo blue cast aluminum wheels. The rim dimensions are 3.50x17 "at the front and 5.50x17" at the rear. Forged aluminum wheels for retrofitting were available as an option and at an additional cost - with identical wheel sizes. The tires are labeled 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 180/55 ZR 17 at the rear. The middle panel of the fuel tank, the panel of the asymmetrical headlight and the front wheel cover are made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic .
Performance / consumption values
The average fuel consumption is 4.6 liters per 100 km. The fuel tank is made of polyethylene and has a capacity of 13 liters, of which 4 liters are reserve. The manufacturer recommends the use of petrol with a knock resistance of at least 98 octane ("SuperPlus"), due to the knock control , fuel with 95 octane can also be used. A regulated three-way catalytic converter with lambda probe lowers the pollutants below the limit values of the Euro-3 emissions standard . The two-pipe 2-in-1 exhaust system comes from Akrapovič.
The Megamoto was only available in the color combination “aura white / magnesium metallic”. Competitive models in the supermoto market segment with a comparable chassis design and engine power were the Ducati Hypermotard 1100 S and the KTM 950 Supermoto .
Racing
On 21 July 2007, the Americans Gary trachy drove on a street-legal HP2 Mega Moto a new course record in 11:46 minutes at the 85th Hill Climb Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in the 1200 cc class.
Reviews
“The BMW shines with excellent cornering stability. What a merit of the tight vote. The rider must not expect comfort. It's made in Sparta on the BMW. Also because the narrow bench is anything but fluffy long-distance furniture. "
“The HP2 Megamoto is a luxury brat. Not only does it cost a lot of money once and not only does it attract attention because of its decadent appearance. It wants to be driven naughty, much more naughty than all previous BMW motorcycles. "
“The HP2 is a robust thing, hard and warm in its set-up, and it reacts quite rough to grooves and steps in the road surface. But this rebellious behavior suits the BMW and only poses problems for the driver if he is surprised by it. Therefore the Megamoto needs full concentration. It is not for pleasure cruisers who want to play leisurely, but demands and wants to be challenged - constantly, always, at all times. "
"The Megamoto is not for traditional BMW customers - far too impractical - and it offers no more than any other soft supermoto despite the big price premium for buyers in that sector."
"The Megamoto is not for traditional BMW customers - far too impractical - and apart from a premium price, it offers customers in this sector no more than any other soft enduro."
