Model 1982 to 1984

R 80 RT model 1982.

The model years 1982 to 1984 were essentially a slimmed-down version of the "bigger sister" R 100 RT. In principle, the smaller motor was simply built into the frame of the R 100 RT. Some of these models did not even have their own operating instructions (called "logbook" in BMW jargon), instead the logbook of the almost identical R 100 models was used. The differences to the R 100 RT included the following:

  • Monochrome paintwork (without the typical black edges)
  • Cylinder head cover not painted
  • Cylinder protection bar only as a special accessory
  • Clock and voltmeter only as optional accessories
  • Case holder only as an optional accessory.
  • Drum brake instead of disc brake on the rear wheel

7,315 of this model were built.

Model Monolever 1984 to 1995

An R 80 RT with a monolever.

The models from model year 1984 (sometimes referred to as R 80 RT / 2) had a single- sided swing arm called a monolever and an 18 inch front wheel instead of the rear swing arm . In addition, the design has been significantly revised, especially the filigree cast aluminum wheels, but also the rear with seat, rear apron and side cover.
22,069 of this model were built.
