The BMW R 1100 GS is a motorcycle from the vehicle manufacturer BMW . The travel enduro was presented in September 1993 at the IAA in Frankfurt am Main . Like all models in the R series, the motorcycle was powered by a boxer engine and final assembly at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau . The model designation GS means terrain / road , the internal factory code is R259. 43,596 units of the model were produced between 1994 and 1999, of which 21,800 were sold in Germany.

Technical specifications

The R 1100 GS is powered by an air / oil-cooled two - cylinder engine with four valves per cylinder and one overhead camshaft per cylinder. The boxer engine has a displacement of 1085 cm³ and develops 59 kW (80 hp). For insurance reasons, most of the motorcycles sold in Germany are reduced to 57 kW (78 hp). The maximum speed is 195 km / h. The empty weight is 243 kg (refueled). The fuel tank has a capacity of 24 liters and, thanks to modern injection technology, enables ranges of over 400 km. The GS has the electronic engine control MA 2.1 / 2.2 from Bosch ( Motronic ). The two cylinders have a bore of Ø 99 mm, the pistons have a stroke of 70.5 mm with a compression ratio of 10.3: 1. The manufacturer recommends using unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane .

The chassis is built on a load-bearing motor / gear unit with a screwed-on subframe. The GS owes the often positive driving behavior to the newly designed front wheel guide called Telelever and the Paralever rear wheel guide.

The new price at the beginning of the sales period was 17,450 DM. Extras such as anti-lock braking systems or heated grips could be ordered ex works.

There are two types of information about the tank content from BMW. The models with a plastic tank were specified with a tank capacity of 25 liters, while the models with a metal tank were only specified with 24 liters. Both statements are correct. The theoretical volume of the tank is 25 liters. However, only 24 liters of this can be used because the tank cannot be completely filled due to the design.

Competitive models were the Honda XRV 750 Africa Twin and Yamaha XTZ 750 Super Ténéré travel bikes . The R 1100 GS was replaced by the expanded R 1150 GS .

Reviews

“With the new boxer generation and the associated chassis technology, BMW is advancing in the form of the R 1100 GS in dimensions that were previously unknown to large travel enduros. In addition to sufficient off-road qualities, it now also covers areas that were previously reserved for large-volume street motorcycles. "

“But despite all the laurels - BMW has not got some problems under control to this day. On the one hand, there is the hooked transmission, which is already known from the RS models. The Bavarian technicians tried to fix the gear jerking at the start of the Enduro by using O-rings between the transmission shafts and wheels. But unfortunately only with the consequence that the already not very good switchability deteriorated again. "
