The BMW R nineT Scrambler is an undisguised motorcycle from Bayerische Motorenwerke . The scrambler was presented at the EICMA in Milan in November 2015 and will be final assembly at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau . The sale started on September 17, 2016. The internal model code is K23, the FIN 0J31.

Conception

On June 13, 2016, the first study called “Concept Path 22” with a mounted surfboard holder was presented at the customizer fair “Wheels and Waves” in the French seaside resort of Biarritz . The name refers to the path 22, via which a popular surf spot on the Atlantic coast can be reached.

The Scrambler is based on the BMW R nineT Roadster , but in contrast to it, it enables a more relaxed, almost upright sitting posture, which results from a handlebar positioned higher and closer to the driver and lower and further rear footrests . The front wheel has a diameter of 19 instead of 17 inches. The front fork is a conventional telescopic fork with rubber bellows instead of an upside-down fork. Because of the larger front wheel, the steering head angle has been made three degrees flatter, which increases the caster by 8.1 mm and increases the wheelbase. The suspension travel on the rear wheel has been increased by 15 millimeters. The calipers are mounted axially instead of radially. The cockpit consists of an analog speedometer in a round housing.

According to BMW project manager Norbert Rebholz, "only the drive, the headlights and the wiring harness have been taken over 1: 1 from the R nineT." Guido Salinger categorizes the scrambler variant as the "Country Road version with a dusty patina for hip old-fashioned fashioned roadster for the urban people. "In Wulf Weis' opinion, the scrambler appeals to all those" for whom the conventional nineT is too expensive - and purists who prefer things a little slimmer. "BMW markets the scrambler together with the roadster and the Urban G / S as a Heritage range.

construction

drive

The air- and oil-cooled two - cylinder engine was adopted almost unchanged from the nineT, but with a revised engine map programming ("mapping") and changes to the exhaust system (larger catalytic converter ) homologated for the Euro-4 emission class, which has been mandatory since January 1, 2016, whereby the maximum torque dropped by 3 Newton meters. The boxer engine has an output of 81 kW (110 hp). The two cylinders together have a displacement of 1170 cm³, which results from a bore of 101 mm and a stroke of 73 mm. The compression ratio is 12.0: 1. The valves of the four-stroke engine are controlled by rocker arms of two chain-driven, overhead camshafts . The crank pin offset of the two opposing pistons is 180 °, the ignition interval is 360 °. A central balancer shaft compensates for first-order moments of inertia that lead to engine vibrations and result from the lateral displacement of the cylinders. The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 217 km / h.

landing gear

The three-part steel tubular space frame consists of a front and a two-part rear frame with a load-bearing motor-gear unit, with the control head integrated in the front part of the frame and the swing arm mount in the rear part of the frame. The wheelbase is 1527 mm, the caster 110.6 mm and the steering head angle 61.5 degrees. The permissible total weight is 430 kg. The rear axle is guided by a single-sided swing arm made of cast aluminum with a central spring strut, the Paralever , which comes from the R 1200 GS travel enduro. The chassis setting can be changed manually via spring preload and rebound damping on the rear axle. The dog-shift gearbox has six gears with a shorter final drive ratio and comes from former Sports Boxer BMW R 1200 S . An optional traction control system (ASC) and a standard combined anti-lock braking system regulate the slip during acceleration and deceleration. The motorcycle has five-spoke cast aluminum wheels at the front and rear as standard; cross-spoke wheels are optionally available. The dimensions of the tires correspond to those of the R 1200 GS, 120/70 ZR 19 at the front and 170/60 ZR 17 at the rear.

Fuel supply

In contrast to the nineT, the 17 liter fuel tank is made of steel. The manufacturer recommends using petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95  octane . The intake snorkel is hidden under an aluminum panel on the right-hand side of the vehicle. The exhaust aftertreatment system uses a regulated three-way catalytic converter to reduce pollutants below the limit values of the Euro-4 emissions standard . In addition, to the left of the shock absorber, an activated carbon filter is installed in the fuel system to hold back evaporated fuel . The exhaust gases are discharged via a central middle silencer and two raised rear silencers on the left-hand side. The Slovenian manufacturer Akrapović produces the double exhaust.

Reviews

Ralf Schütze criticizes on the motorline.cc web portal that you notice “after about two hours of driving” that “the standard bench is more geared towards short turns to your favorite café than long distances.” According to John Urry, the scrambler should be used less consider it a "fashion bike" as it is more like "a fantastic looking, lightweight version of the GS that happily lacks the cluttered electronics that grace the current water-cooled model."

“The new one celebrates a no-frills, gnarled way of driving. In fast cornering it stiffens a little, is not unwieldy, but relies on clear steering impulses, not uncomfortable, but animated by a healthy basic hardness, so no cuddly motorcycle, but a 220-kilo package of character. "

“With the Scrambler, BMW has taken purism, that is, the renunciation of unnecessary frills, a little further. The classic speedometer has neither a rev counter nor a fuel gauge, when the petrol is running low, this is indicated by a remaining distance light. "

- Peter Fahrenholz : Süddeutsche Zeitung

“Really bad roads are not a scrambler thing. On the other hand, it works surprisingly well on gravel paths; if there are bad potholes, however, heavyweights in the saddle can use up all the travel. "

- Ulf Böhringer : Handelsblatt

“BMW weren't aiming for dirt-shredding capability here. They have their GS range for that. Instead, they set out to capture on 'off the beaten track' vibe - an upright, agile and robust bike with an air of approachability. […] So although we wouldn't attempt to cross Africa - or enter it into an enduro - we'd be more than happy to take it for a blast across our local fire roads. "

“BMW wasn't aiming at the ability to dig in the dirt. That's why they have their GS series. Instead, they set out to capture an 'off the beaten path' mood - an upright, agile and rugged motorcycle with a touch of accessibility. [...] Although we wouldn't try to cross Africa with her - or call her enduro - we would be more than pleased to drive her through our local firebreak. "
