Previous model BMW R 1200 GS (K50)

The BMW R 1250 GS is an all-terrain, partially faired motorcycle made by Bayerische Motoren Werke . Like all models in the R series, it is powered by a boxer engine and final assembly at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau . The travel enduro was announced in a press release on September 17, 2018 and presented on October 3, 2018 at the Intermot two-wheeler fair in Cologne. Delivery started in October 2018.

The internal factory code is, despite extensive modifications to the engine and the new sales designation, as in the previous model (without variable valve control) K50 . The abbreviation GS stands for terrain / street . The K50 is the fifth generation of chassis in the GS series with a boxer engine, which has been built since 1980 .

development

Five years after the introduction of the K50, the engine was revised on the cylinders and cylinder heads . Externally, the R 1250 differs from the R 1200 only in minor corrections to the fairing, inscriptions, different colors and a cockpit with a standard 6.5-inch (16.5 cm) full-color TFT display. The inside diameter of the cylinder (bore) has been increased by 1.5 mm and the stroke by 3 mm, increasing the displacement by 84 cm³ (+ 7%). The maximum torque increased by 18 to 143 Newton meters at 6250 / min, the maximum output to 100 kW (136 hp) at 7750 / min. The oil cooling was adapted to the higher nominal output and the 1 kg heavier silencer was designed in accordance with EURO 5.

Five kilograms more weight than the previous model results, among other things, from a revised crankcase , a heavier crankshaft with wider bearings, new, 700 grams heavier cylinder heads with camshaft adjustment and their actuators . In the camshaft drive, toothed chains that run more quietly are used instead of roller chains and a spur gear drive . The larger pistons require a heavier balance shaft for better smoothness .

Two-stage valve control

The variable, two-stage valve control works with solenoids (actuators) that insert pins into coulisse and thus move the camshaft axially within 5 milliseconds while the inlet valves are closed. At partial load , the valve lift of the two inlets is reduced to 2 and 4 mm and the valves are opened with a 70 ° phase shift. Due to the shifted timing, the intake flow of fuel and air swirls. At higher loads, but at the latest from a speed of 5000 min −1 , the full load cam is inserted.

construction

drive

The air and water-cooled two - cylinder four-stroke engine generates a nominal output of 100 kW (136 hp) and a maximum torque of 143 Nm at a speed of 6500 min −1 from a displacement of 1254 cm³ . The two opposite cylinder of the piston engine having a bore mm of 102.5, the piston has a stroke of 76 mm at a compression ratio of 12.5: 1. The two overhead camshafts in the two cylinder heads controlled by cam follower two inlet and two Exhaust valves.

Engine block with right cylinder head

Due to the design, the flat engine has a good mass balance due to the symmetrical movement of the two opposing pistons and is consequently quieter than in-line or V-engines with two or three cylinders.

The crank drive is clockwise, the crankshaft drives the water pump at the front and the alternator at the rear. The shaft is connected to the clutch basket via a pair of gears. The counter-rotating clutch neutralizes part of the tilting torque typical of horizontally mounted boxer engines. The oil pump has two rotors. One rotor generates the oil pressure for the lubrication of the main and connecting rod bearings, the second for the clutch and engine cooling.

In the speed range from 3500 to 7500 revolutions a torque of over 120 Nm is available. The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.6 seconds and, according to the manufacturer, reaches a top speed of 219 km / h.

Power transmission

The primary drive works with gears. The anti-hopping clutch is operated hydraulically, and the claw-shift, helical gearbox has six gears. The secondary drive is a cardan shaft .

Electrics

The starter battery has a capacity of 12 Ah. The on-board electronics communicate via a LIN and CAN bus with the Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA, electronic suspension or chassis adjustment ), with the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the automatic stability control (ASC) . The throttle position is electronically converted into the corresponding throttle position . The alternator generates a nominal electrical output of 510 watts. An LED headlight with integrated daytime running lights illuminates the route.

Fuel supply

Presentation at the Paris Motor Show 2018

The R 1250 GS has electronic fuel injection with digital engine electronics (BMS-O) and a transistor-controlled spark plug per cylinder. BMW indicates the average fuel consumption of 4.75 liters per 100 km according to the World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC). The fuel tank has a usable volume of 20 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. The theoretical range on the country road is 420 km.

The manufacturer recommends the use of unleaded gasoline with a knock resistance of at least 95  octane . BMW has integrated a knock sensor that enables the use of low-quality fuel with an octane number of less than 95 RON. A regulated three-way catalytic converter treats the exhaust gas . With it, the vehicle falls below the emission limit values of the Euro-5 emissions standard . The 2-in-1 exhaust system ends on the right-hand side in a revised rear silencer made of stainless steel with valve control.

landing gear

The chassis is based on a torsion- resistant lattice frame made of steel tubes and has a single-sided swing arm made of cast aluminum with an additional trailing arm ( Paralever ). The front wheel is guided by a fork with a trailing arm ( Telelever ) with a 37 mm standpipe diameter and 190 mm travel. Optionally, a three-stage, electronic suspension adjustment ( English Electronic Suspension Adjustment, ESA ) and a standard vehicle dynamics control ( English Automatic Stability Control, ASC ) are offered. The front support made of magnesium alloy consists of the cockpit instruments, the windshield, the lighting and the "beak". The gross vehicle weight is 465 kg, the maximum payload with standard equipment is 216 kg.

At the front, the R 1250 GS has a double disc brake with a four-piston brake calliper from Hayes Brake, and a disc brake with a single-piston floating calliper at the rear . A standard anti-lock braking system supports the deceleration on both brakes. The motorcycle needs a braking distance of 39.3 meters from 100 km / h to a standstill, which means that it decelerates with an average of 9.8 m / s².

Reviews

"The appearance of the new boxer [is] neat, stronger and therefore more coherent."

- Peter Mayer : Motorrad , issue 21/2018

"What she uses to defend itself [against competing models] is not top performance - others have significantly more - but a combination of versatility, unspoilt charm, beefy character, extraordinary drivability and maneuverability with luggage and without, alone or in pairs, which is difficult to copy. on the road or in the field. [...] After the impressions of our first test drives on the road and off-road, the boxer, who is now jamming, climbs to new heights in terms of his parade discipline of reaching through rough terrain. Confident, almost unstoppable, without any jerking under partial load, it goes to work, pulls up just above idle speed. "

“The Shift Cam works more harmoniously, more politely and finely, hardly has these annoying grinding noises and turns up more evenly. The background noise is much more pleasant for the driver, but the sound from the exhaust is still full and typical for Boxers. Overall, the new GS sounds more modern and a little quieter. "

- Christoph Lentsch : motorcycle magazine

“With the R 1250 GS, BMW Motorrad shows where Bavaria's expertise lies: in building excellent engines and chassis as well as putting together coherent overall packages. The new Boxer GS, fit for the next homologation standard Euro 5, has become a steam hammer. She should be able to defend her throne as the world's most popular travel enduro over the next few years without any problems. "
